Anyone mount a Viar 88P portable compressor in driver bed cubby?

Has anyone mounted a Viar 88P portable air compressor in the driver side bed cubbie?

It's too tall to mount vertically ( standing upright ), but if its mounted horizontally on its side, it will fit. A support bracket will likely be needed on the exterior of the cubby inside the fender along with some rubber washers or something to minimize vibration on the inside.

I'm also guessing that the cord for battery power from the alligator clips will need to be spliced to extend long enough to reach battery -> cubby. An air extension hose from Viar should allow all tires to be reached from the bed cubby.

I know, I know. Why not just an single ARB with a modified cubby mount? I have to do this on a budget to keep my Mrs happy. So... I have to get creative right now. Later on, yes I'll do it that way.

May want to completely replace the wiring rather than just splice. The resistance over such a long run from the front may negatively impact inflation speed.

Thanks Tyler. I'll discuss this when I schedule my electrical work with @AY_ARONTRD .

I've seen pictures here in forum (sorry I don't have a link) where at least one person has done it. They replaced the wiring, added a remote power switch and cut the existing hose short (~12") to add a standard quick connect.

Definitely recommend upgrading wiring. The wiring that comes with it is appropriate only for a short run. Personally, I’d run 8 or 10 gauge back and forth. You could run it through a relay hooked to a cab mounted switch and leave the switch on the 88P on all the time, then the pump won’t be energized till the switch to the relay is thrown.

I’d maybe suggest, depending on your level of discipline and how nice you want to make it, add a timer circuit to the relay. The 88P is only rated to run so long continuously without being powered down to cool off.

Subbed to see how this turns out, I just picked up an 88P and havn't utilized that little cubby for anything yet. Awesome Idea.

Good ideas! I'll discuss all of this with the electrician that will be doing my wiring.

Either that, or just use the switch at the pump to cycle on and off. I don’t recall the duty cycle off the top of my head but I don’t run mine more than five minutes without a cool down. Usually that’s plenty to bump up a low tire.

I think the specs and reviews are saying 20 minutes IIRC before allowing some cool down. I did a test run on one of my stock tires ( 265/65/17 ) and it went from 20 psi to 37.5 in less than three minutes, so a full airing up will should be a piece of cake. When I get my 33's ( 255/65/17 ), I expect a similar time frame.

I had a Viair 85P just refuse to turn on one day after very little use (checked fuses, everything). You might want to go with one of their more premium models or a different brand if you’re going to commit to mounting one.

Agreed, which is why I'm just exploring options right now. If/when I upgrade to a single ARB, I'll be looking to re-home this Viar, so I'm hesitant to chop it up.

The problem you’ll run into with the existing power wires is voltage drop. The wires are tiny for 20 amps. That’s why the instructions are emphatic about running the pump only when the engine is running (since a healthy alternator will put out more than 12 volts.) amps x volts = watts

IF you opt not to replace the existing power wires, I’d go over size on the wiring up to maybe 4 gauge, or whatever is appropriate for a dual ARB compressor. That’ll minimize voltage loss up to that point at least and you’ve already got your power wiring run for an eventual upgrade.

You could terminate power and ground to insulated lugs embedded in the cubby, and clip your leads into them. Down the road, ditch the lugs and wire straight to your compressor.

I store mine behind the seat in a canvas bag I picked up on Amazon. It gets super hot when I'm using it and to keep it cool, anytime I'm running it I place it in the floorboard of the truck with the AC blowing on it. The air line is long enough to run from the floorboard to either tire on that side. Just a thought.

The compressor works ok for my 265/75/16 tires to go from 15 psi to 37 psi but if it dies I'll be getting a bigger one.

8 gauge wire supports ~18.6 ft for 12 volts and 20 amps with less than a 2% voltage drop.

    10 gauge ~11.7 ft.
