No, that's a new one on me. There's the 6.8 SPC which is a .270, but there's a better selection of bullets for the 6.5 Grendel, which I suppose only really matters if you're hand loading. Either one though would probably give you higher muzzle velocity than a .223 based cartridge with a larger caliber bullet. Of course, there's also the 6mm TCU, which is a necked up .223. Personally though, I wouldn't go any further than a 6.5 Grendel before stepping up to an AR 10.

Well you're in luck then. I just looked it up at Midway and the most expensive box of .458 SOCOM ammo they have is $3.25/round.

    :goingcrazy:

Man, I'm going crazy here waiting for all my new goodies. I'm going to have to go buy a box of 6.5 Creedmoor to use to sight-in the new rifle (which not only has a new chamber, but is also getting a 20 MOA pic rail scope base) and so I'll have some spare brass to load up dummy rounds for each bullet I have so I can simplify setting up my dies. The 20 MOA rail should make things interesting since my LCS has 1/8 MOA clicks. When I bore sight it, I'll probably be clicking my arse off, lol. That will be another challenge in itself. The last time I bore sighted a rifle was before I needed glasses. The first shot was on the paper in one shot and in the x ring on the following shot. I just hope the recoil don't kick the jeebus outa me. It won't be like the AR where you can go a fire 3 or 4 hundred rounds and not be the slightest bit sore. I'm hoping for at least 50 rounds before my shoulder is a mess of ruptured capillaries and bruising, lol. I might be surprised though. It might not be that much worse than the 6.5 BR, especially with the muzzle brake, although my shoulder was still sore after 50 rounds of 6.5 BR firing with free recoil.

Oh, and pro tip, I bought a quick release pic rail riser for my bipod on the AR because the one I was using was too damn tall...read the directions first. I went to put it on and promptly broke the damn thing. It's not quick release anymore. I had to go to Lowes and buy an M4x70 30mm bolt and make some minor modifications, but the thing is on there. Of course, that wouldn't have been necessary at all if the stupid bipod had tightened down properly on the rifle's fore end pic rail. Should help out with my rear bag constantly being too low.

I'm debating if I want to get a bipod mounted on the Creedmoor. I have a really nice front rest, but the damn thing is heavy. Still it has a lot of adjustability advantages over a bipod.

The Stribog is cool, I like them too. I can't buy any guns right now, saving for a new truck.

I still think the .458 SOCOM would be the way to go, just for the LOLs. When I had my bone stock Ruger M77 .338 Win Mag, every time I touched it off at the range, I'd see heads pop up, up and down the line like Wack-a-mole, with people looking like WTF was that? As dust sifted down from the ceiling. Didn't even have a muzzle brake or anything, but it still spoke with undeniable authority. Having that happen with an innocuous looking AR would be hysterical.

And for what it's worth, for a skinny barreled hunting rifle, it would shoot 1 MOA 3 shot groups with factory ammo @ 100yrds. That was back in my 20s though. I still couldn't shoot more than 20 rounds per trip, due to both the cost of the ammo and the fact that my shoulder would be a bit tender by then. I sold it when my interests changed, but it was still good times.

It's still on its way home. I should be getting the muzzle brake the following day. I'll put some up then. When you look up "long gun" in the dictionary, one of those pics will be beside it, haha. 28" barrel with 2" of muzzle break on the end of it then the butt stock. It's gonna be crazy. I wish I wasn't too cheap to buy a chrono. All the velocities for the load data in the book are based off a 24" barrel. I'm hoping for at least another 100 fps more per load.

And I'm still vacillating between where I'm going with it from there. On the one hand, the MDT chassis with a MAGPUL PRS butt stock all in MAGPUL Stealth Gray cerecote would be bad ass and it won't need to be modified to fit my IBS heavy varmint profile barrel (1.25" for 5" beyond the bolt face and then a straight taper to .94" @ 26". The crown used to be about .875" before it was threaded. On the other hand, I really like the more traditional MAGPUL Hunter 700 stock in Stealth Gray, but it would need to be inletted for my barrel as it will only free float a medium Palma profile which is a lot skinnier than mine. I'd also have to get their trigger guard/magazine set up. Depending on the inletting, if it can be done, it'd still be cheaper than the Chassis route. Either way, it'd look awesome if I had the barrel cerecoated in a stripey light gray, medium gray, stealth gray camo pattern.

It comes down to whether I want this...

$500 for the aluminum chassis, another $250 for the PRS butt stock and I have buy an AR type pistol grip, an AR rifle buffer tube, and a magazine. And if they won't cerecoat it in MAGPUL Stealth gray, I'd have to have that done as well...or I could just go with all black with only my raw stainless barrel to accent it. (My R700 action is nitride black)

    Or this...

This one is only $250, plus the $70 for the trigger guard/mag well and one mag. Then whatever it costs to have the stock inletted to fit the barrel, assuming it can be done.

I know nothing about long range shooting. So from a purely how cool it looks standpoint the Magpul is the winner for me. If the space gun chassis will shot better and more accurately then that would be the only reason I would choose it.

I'm not a fan of the spindly butt stocks they have in most of their pictures. The MAGPUL AR PRS stock is lot more solid looking and I like the adjustments on it...

They do claim something like an 18% accuracy improvement with the chassis (over what, I don't know...factory stock? Aftermarket stock, properly bedded and inletted? They didn't say) and a lot of the long range shooters seem to be using them. Seems like the barrel would have more airflow around it back towards the breech, so it might stay cooler and cool down quicker. I know once my heavy profile barrel gets hot, you might as well clean the bore and maybe even wait another hot/cold fire cycle for it to cool down depending on how hot you let it get beforehand. I generally go by when I can't leave my finger on 5" breech section for more than a few seconds. If it gets so hot you jerk you finger back right away, then it's going to be a while before it gets cool enough to fire again, without immediately getting that hot again. That's the disadvantage of a heavy barrel.

I heard from MDT a minute ago. If I want any other color than desert tan or black, I have to take it to someone that does cerakoting and have them do it. Kinda stupid really. If I'm paying $500 for something they are already cerakoting, why not do it in what ever color I want and then charge me for the cerakote and send me the unused portion. Hell, they offer 8 other colors on their other chassis systems, but will only do this one in two.

I guess what I'm working myself up to is, that seems unreasonable to me and it's a deal breaker, even though I really like the look and function. But then, if the MAGPUL stock can't be inletted for my barrel...:notsure: Maybe I'll just have my current stock...an HS Precision refinished. Do the stock and barrel in winter camo or some variation there of and have a removable pic rail mounted and on the fore end for a bipod (because really, my BR rest is heavy as hell and that's one of the reasons I like shooting the AR better).

I've been so back and forth for probably 3 years on whether I should build an AR-10 (I'm stuck on the .308win platform) or buy one complete, and then just upgrade things as I go. I will get on PSA once every few months, shop and get the urge to buy something, but then back out because I just can't decide . Part of me says just buy the whole thing, but my more frugal side says buy in parts/pieces and build slowly. And now, being that hunting season is over, I will have plenty of time to build one and have it ready by October..... decisions....
