I haven't been up there in a couple years, and when I went it was closed. Not sure if/when it opens.

The top of Lusardi appears to be always closed since folks constantly report that it is. @TacoTyusday , be mindful of Santa Ysabel because it is narrow with very few places to pass oncoming traffic and pin striping is a high probability since it is rather overgrown ( at least based on the locals I chatted with last year about it ).

Hm okay that's very good to know, good looking out!

As my first trail, not really sure where Lusardi sits as far as assessment goes, def had some narrow parts to it but nothing too harrowing, decently bumpy, and slightly overgrown but nothing serious enough to leave any marks on my truck, though that might be due to the white paint.

Palomar Mountain is always a good mix and I hear that Black Mountain is rutted to offer some minor challenges. BM is near Lusardi and SY while Palomar is in a different direction.

If any of you guys wanna join in or set up another trail run, feel free to PM. Would love to get to know you guys past the forum and make some connections, as well as occupy my weekends since group socializing is a thing of the past now.

I was out there last December and came from the Sutherland Dam side (which is neat on its own) and the gate at Lusardi was closed, so it's still only an out and back which sucks because it's the perfect connector to the upper Santa Ysabel trail. With Black Mountain, Black Canyon, and Pamo right nearby it's a nice day of playing around back there

Does the Sutherland Dam trail connect to the Upper Santa Ysabel trail at black Canyon?

Yeah, Sutherland Dam Rd goes north past the dam and then you hit a "Y" - to the left is Upper SY Rd and to the right is Black Canyon Rd. That's why it's too bad that gate at Lusardi isn't open, because if you turn right at the end of SY onto Pamo, the locked Lusardi gate is like right there. Also, there's a campground off of Black Canyon Rd. No clue if it's open though

Got it!, funny you say that, OnX maps show the Black Canyon campsite but when I googled it, it does not exist. On a review for the trail it was mentioned that the site is abandoned. Also looks like there is an old bridge close by.

I've never been to this part of CNF looking to run that area very soon. I have not even been north of San Diego Country yet...

Lusardi is closed at Pamo Rd?? I thought it was closed at the 76..

IDK about the 76 but it was open at the Pamo Road entrance when i went just this past Sunday, just closed off at the very end of the trail. I assume that's the 76 entrance but not too familiar so I could be wrong

Yea looks like it continues north onto private land and eventually to the 76 after that gate.

San Diego might as well be a country when I try to talk friends from OB/PB/SDSU area into coming to Vista for a pub crawl night... to them I might as well live in Canada

The road to the campsite might as well be paved, at least when I was out there in Dec it was a graded dirt road. Still nice curves and views though. I got buzzed by a lowered Honda Civic when I had stopped to take pics of a pretty canyon creek, which 1) gives you an idea of the road and 2) is why I even found that campsite lol I hadn't mapped the route ahead of time and was flying blind which I don't like to do on solo trips but I figured if the Honda could go, I could
As for Lusardi, the south end of the gate was closed. The one right by the split where there's an old bridge that's closed to traffic because it goes nowhere, which might be the one you're seeing.

Go here to see a few pics from when I was out there, scroll down a little to the "Sutherland Dam" part. There's pics of the bridge:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/small-truck-big-dreams-build-adventures.638620/

Edited to say I'm lousy at keeping up with my build page...I should put the pics of the Leap Day run on there at least
