I just had a spare key made at my local hardware store for my "09 Taco and it won't work. Can you tell by looking at the original key to see if it has one of those computer chip keys?

Also the key will not open the door or the ignition.

Not sure about the doors, but I had the understanding all Toyota keys are "chipped" and your vehicle won't start without the computer reading that chip near the ignition. As for the doors, I'm not so sure. Since I tend to leave my keys in my truck a lot, I was hoping to get a key w/o a chip to leave in the bed just to get into my truck and get my keys back.

Yeah they wont work at all you need to get the chip programmed so that your able to use it when you start your vehicle so i suggest going to the dealer and see how much they charge and then go a to key place to see if they do computer chip keys and see if they are cheaper then the dealer and the keys are not cheap $115-130.

I checked with the dealer. He checked with my VIN and mine is not equipped with the computer chip key. I just got back from the hardware store and he recut the key on a different machine. I just drove the Taco home from the store using that key.

    Thanks for the replies.

If my Taco had this security feature then why did it allow me to start my motor and drive it home several miles? I thought the whole purpose was to prevent the vehicle from starting period.

FWIW mine is a pretty basic Taco with 2.7, auto and air. The only other thing it has is power windows and locks but no keyless entry. It was also made in CA if that matters.

I just got out my '09 Owners Manual. Page 76, 1-6.

It also shows a light that comes on the dash after key removal to tell you that the system is working. Mine does not have that light.

I don't think so. I just checked the window sticker and the immobilzer is not mentioned anywhere. If you still have your sticker look to see if it came as a standalone option or part of a package.

Were you carrying your original key in your pocket?

Any idea of what digit and what code from the VIN indicates immobilizer or not?

I think the important question to ask the OP is when he said "it wouldnt work" does that mean it wouldnt turn in the ignition and/or door locks, or would it turn the ignition but not do anything?

If they key was cut wrong (which seems to be the case since re-cutting it solved his problem), wouldnt he have known right when he got back to his car??

The key would not turn in either the door lock or the ignition switch. After recutting the key it opened the door lock and turned in the ignition switch and the engine started.

I don't think the VIN has that info. It apparently gave the dude at the dealership access to show what equipment was installed on my vehicle.

Ok, here we go dudes. This is straight from the Toyota website. Looking at options for the Tacoma 4 x 2 Access Cab, 2.7 with 4 speed auto. Under the "Features" tab look at the "Safety" view. Scroll down to "Engine Immobilizer" and it is list as "not available."

    http://www.toyota.com/tacoma/features.html

P.S. Just checking some of the other Taco specs, it would appear that the engine immobilizer comes standard with the V6 but is unavailable with the 2.7 I4.
