Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
One thing that gets me about some SAR units is their inflexibility. "This is how we've always done it, so that's how we will keep doing it." is the pinnacle of poor management. I was happy with San Mateo's unit before I moved to NV. They do a good job of building people up into staff and leadership positions, and that trickles down to each new crop of trainees. The more I research other SAR units, the more I see that's the exception, not the rule.

There is definitely more politics in SAR than I would have hoped, and that's starting to turn me off - big time. Problem is, I was 'broken in' by a unit that wasn't political at all. So my expectations were all ass-backwards. Such is life. More time for fishing and hunting and beer'ing and stuff!

I really wish the YOSAR would take on other SAR dept's for training. Those boys are the top of the class. In the US there's not a unit that comes close.

I was a paid firefighter for years and have climbed for a very long time. I used to teach self-rescue and high angle rope work. It pains me to watch some of my local SAR units train. And this is in a climbing community. lol

Don't know any of the YOSAR folks personally, but we use many of their techniques and practices for our own TRT team in San Mateo (mostly cliff rescue stuff). They're definitely top of the game. I was going to Rigging For Rescue later this year, but at last check, everything is on hold or cancelled.

Most SAR units don't train enough for high angle and steep angle rescue. A quarterly exercise is not sufficient, and ideally within a SAR unit, you need to have qualified personnel (riggers, station leads, rescue group supervisors) who practice regularly. I was lucky, in that we had 2 TRT trainings per month, odd months were USAR (so using Fire methods/practices/equipment) and even months were SAR (using wilderness methods/practices/equipment). The only downside was for working on PORS, you had to maintain somewhat different racks of gear due to different ropes/tools/etc. It got expensive in a hurry (still totally worth it).

Wife still doesn't understand why I have a collection of different harnesses for wilderness, USAR/confined space, positioning gear, 3 different sets of Purcells, big pulleys, little pulleys, 4 bags of practice rope, canyoneering rope, an Aztek and a different set of fours, and why I used my children as rescue loads when I would practice building systems in the driveway. :) I won't get into the collection of DCDs (and my collection is small by comparison to others!)

    Fun times!

Found a great spot along the Little Truckee last night. Weather was perfect and there weren’t a ton of people out. You can drive up Jackson Meadows Rd right until Meadow Lake turn off then you hit a huge snow bank and can’t go any further.

    9100F9C4-DA4D-42F2-9F6A-E82DFA66AF0F.jpg

This morning I pulled an Audi out of the snow bank on the paved road. Apparently they thought low profile summer tires and limited ground clearance along with some Sierra cement would be a good idea. Also no recovery points or hitch and they didn’t even have the screw in tow hook so I ended up wrapping a tree saver through the rear lower control arm.

Anyone have recommendations for contractors? I’m looking to build a 2-3 car detached garage in my backyard.

I'll be following along on your project. We are hoping to build a 4 car garage with an apartment above in the next 24 months.

Do you have plans and a permit already?

No I don’t have anything yet. Just starting the process. I have to call NV Energy tomorrow to see if I have to upgrade my service. Right now I only have a 100 amp main breaker but I’m hoping the lines run to my house can handle more than that.

I’m also going to call and see what Tuff Shed can do. It looks like they do garages. I’m not looking for anything fancy. Just a 2.5-3 car garage with only a 2 car door and a small shop area in the third bay. Only custom parts are I want 10 foot ceilings and an 8 foot door.

I did go to the city a while back to check my setbacks and they’re only 2 feet which is nice. The only other limitation was the roof of the garage can’t be higher than the house which shouldn’t be an issue.

I don’t have personal experience with Tuff Shed, but I sat through a few conversations between them and my old boss trying to get warranty help for hours, then they skipped the appointment, then another few hours of sitting on hold, then skipped out again.

He ended up having someone else repair cause he couldn’t take it. Again not my personal experience but looked extremely frustrating.

I’ve seen some decent metal sheds/out buildings come through my feed on IG and was surprised at how good some looked and how relatively affordable they were.

I don’t think I can do metal. It’s supposed to have the same style siding as the house. I live in the middle of town in the old university area so the more commercial style stuff probably won’t fly.

Went camping at a pretty well known spot in Monitor Valley this weekend, we had a great time but I was amazed at how many people were out there. On a typical weekend theres maybe 1 other camp site full.

Took the cave road over and wow, there must have been about 20 campers at the springs.

Love that area. The springs are so hit or miss these days. I don’t go to those ones often because they’re so well known but when I do it’s either pretty chill with only a few people or it’s a full on zoo with 20-30 trailers and 100+ people.
