Thanks, it’s a little disappointing but I think we’re going to try to settle and make it a project, the engine needs an overhaul (about 10-11K), the avionics are out of date (at least 5-7K to upgrade), and it needs paint but the hail damage is almost all cosmetic, if we want to live with divots it’s a decent deal for us.
If I didn’t want to get my PPL dad would let insurance take it and buy a used kitfox and order a RANS kit but he doesn’t want me to pay for the plane rental for instruction and he doesn’t want me to ground loop a kitfox or rans while I’m learning.

So...that means he's going to hard slice it into the woods on #4?

I mean, in my experience that's what's probably going to happen.

    Don't judge my game.

We may end up letting the 182 go to insurance, what older (budget of ~20-25K) planes would have similar STOL performance to the 182 STOL? Larger cabins (I’m 6’3”) would be a bonus, we’re looking for something that I could use to get my license as well a another friend of ours.
I haven’t measured our runway yet but it should be around 1500 ft, and we’ll have trees topped in each direction, keep in mind it’ll be a grass strip as well, but we would like to comfortably be able to fly in and out.

I'm not sure of the exterior wall thickness but liquid hydrogen will only stay liquid when stored below -250F, so there is an inner chamber and an exterior wall.

Not everyone uses Lh2 though, that's one reason.

A 180hp 172 with sportsman cuff makes for a great 2 person STOL plane to learn in but it would be at least double your budget.

First tail wheel lesson today. Instructions for the first landing required a sideslip between trees to line up with the grass runway
CFI: Aim for that tree, but don’t hit that tree.
    Me: OK.
