Here is the owners manual text: "The GXT1000/1050 Series operates on GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) frequencies which require an FCC (Federal Communications Commission) license. You must be licensed prior to operating on channels 1 - 7 or 15 - 42, which comprise the GMRS channels of the GXT1000/1050 Series.

Do you just use channels 8-14 43-50 then?

 

I have these radios and usually use ch 14. No license.

I think I’m the only one that got the license, and it didn’t take too long. I grabbed the MXT-105 which I will let you have for $80 (it’s brand new) so I can step up to at least the 15 watt model. This is mostly just nostalgia for my younger days working for the Forest Service, but now I don’t have to carry 9 extra AA batteries.

Figured if I’m ever pinging repeaters in need of help in the middle of nowhere I won’t be bummed I have the license, but nobody is checking. They’re pretty sweet radios compared to the old stuff, no matter what you get.

Thanks Tim, all good over here for the most part. The project I worked on for the past 18 months went kablamo but I saw it coming, and what a wild ride it was so no regrets. Back to writing fulltime again which has been a pleasant surprise. If you guys are buying new socks, look at FITS, yes full disclosure that's who I'm writing for. Gotta love the freelance life...

I helped a friend and old colleague out with a photoshoot the other weekend, which paid for REGEARING THE TRUCK, and as someone who has worked in the outdoor industry for a decade, I've heard a lot of people talk up whatever trendy bullshit product they're hawking. So, while my buddy was enamored with their wares I would decide for myself. I happened to be wearing a pair of plush as hell socks from another great sock maker from NZ, that I bought while in NZ, pulled on a pair of FITS while rolling my eyes, and had to eat my eye roll. The truck ended up in the shoot too somehow. Yay.

Nobody paid me to write that. I don't care what socks you wear or buy, but most everything in every industry is disposable garbage and I appreciate genuine craftsmanship. So, as I step off my soapbox, I'll make sure to bring a few pairs next time they send me a care package.

In other news, replaced the Duratracs with 255/85R16 Cooper ST Maxx tires and they're super dope with less rubbing, regeared to 4.88 (Scott has power again with 33s and kickass gas mileage), drilled through my fender and added a dorkel (snorkel), sanded my crap truck bed to Raptor line this weekend, sanded some chipped paint areas to fill prime and seal, added a RAM ball mount to my driver's side a-pillar, which being a 2001 Tacoma didn't come with an Oh-$*#% handle but now has one, plus the ram mount, sold the Wildernest and now sprint to finish my GoFastCamper, or LightandFastCamper, but I don't want to jinx myself so that's all I'll say for now.

As soon as the camper is done I'm heading toward Klamath Falls to look at properties. Only been back in Portland for 9 months and I'm ready to move back to the middle of nowhere.

 

Wow, you've been busy! That's awesome. While I wish you the best in life I hate to hear you'll move away soon, though. You're alright...for a white guy.

How do you like the 4.88s? What was stock in yours (SR5 v6 4x4)?

 

Hah! I have the 3.4 V6 which doesn't make near the power the new motors do, so take that into consideration. My truck was originally geared 4.10 but after adding the bumper, winch, sliders, former Wildernest, and finally the 33s, even starting on a hill in first was crappy, and starting in second wasn't a thing anymore. I drove around a gear below what would be normal. Now I'm +1% over-geared from stock, pretty damn close, and the truck is a truck again, tons of power, 200 miles until I change the gear oil. First gear is slow again, I can start in second, and cannot wait to put it in 4-lo and crawl up something rocky. Gas mileage has improved significantly, the speedometer is now 5 mph over instead of under...I think...I'll change the speedo gear eventually. I'll wait until the new camper is on and loaded up for the final verdict, and I'll just go up to 315s if it feels like it needs it.

 

Nice! Hey, at least you make peak torque 1,000 rpms sooner than us 3.5 V6 guys. That's my biggest gripe with my motor. It feels like a smaller motor than what it is.

Your 5 speed transmission gearing is almost exactly the same as my 6 speed manual on gears 1 thru 5. My first gear is a tiny bit lower than yours, but even with all your mods I figure your truck is still lighter than mine.

I really like the first gens. With only a little bigger tire and no locker they do really well! You're way past that now. I'm happy to see you made some progress on mods despite the current state of the world!

Possibly... I’m in Sandy so I'm out n about almost every weekend, just never really plan anything.

 

Does anyone have experience with Raptor lining? Instructions call for an air compressor that runs 8 cfm @ 100psi, I found one to rent that's 7 cfm @100psi, and I think I'm shooting closer to 50 psi if that makes a difference. Have a post in the actual Raptor line thread but, you know...post something where it belongs and no one says anything. Trying to take advantage of the decent weather tomorrow and the bed is already prepped.

 

I used to spray this stuff in large volumes at work many years ago (onto the underside of semi tanker trailers...rear subframe area and under belly). I would say your air setup should be enough. Even if you end up needing to increase the pressure I think it'll be ok. You aren't doing a huge area. The compressor has time to "catch up" between coats.

First and foremost, making sure the surface is well scuffed, very clean and degreased, and very dry is most important.

Spraying during high humidity is also best avoided (above 80% ish). I believe late morning to mid day will be your best time to spray while the humidity is dropping.

Just don't spray too late in the evening as the rising humidity will cause the nighttime dew to settle onto all your hard work that hasn't dried yet. This won't look nice or help your adhesion and drying. This stuff dries pretty quickly (U-POL Raptor Liner pdf says it dries to touch in less than 1 hr @68F).

Avoid covering it with a tarp or anything afterwards as it will disrupt the curing process. If it's going to be in a garage overnight then you're fine anyway concerning the dew. I wouldn't worry too much about it. You just don't wanna finish spraying your last coat right as the sun is setting. Just be aware of that. I made this mistake painting a truck in the yard once due to poor time management.

I would spray a very light first coat. It's ok if the color does not cover uniformly on the first coat. Let it flash off per whatever amount of time your label says (60 mins per pdf). This will help avoid runs on your next coat and help the adhesion. Second coat can be sprayed a little more liberally. Repeat for up to 3 coats per pdf instructions. Make sure to take apart and clean your gun between coats as soon as you're finished spraying. This shit will clog up quickly.

If anything I say doesn't match up with instructions on the label, obviously follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

I have been busy weekends and haven't been able to make it out at all. Going camping next weekend, super stoked about that. Planning on heading and wandering around one weekday this coming up week. Finally got my 12v air compressor. Gonna be real nice not to have to stop somewhere to air up.

Thinking maybe we can get a meet up going Sunday the 7th of June. Get this crew rolling again.

I definitely don't push my luck in the snow when I'm solo. I always want to push my luck...but I don't.

 

Yeah, I’ve tried going up lolo solo and then hit a patch of snow. It’s deep enough and sloppy enough to just halt the truck in place. Too far to drive for that to happen. But I guess if El Duderino made it, there couldn’t be too much. Otherwise, you know who I’m calling for a recovery. Lol

 

Sunday’s are tough, but I will definitely try and make it. I’m getting a lift on this Monday, so going to need to “test” it out right?!

 

Maybe next year you will get a chance to play in the snow around town for a few days. You just need more practice
