Greetings, I am new here. I'm looking at a 2006 Tacoma with the 4 cylinder engine. The truck looks very clean but does have 199K on it. It's from a private seller, second owner. He has all the maintenance records and looks like he kept it well. My questions are: is there still a decent amount of life in the motor with that many miles on it? Are there any major maintenance items I would need to look into right away like a timing chain/belt? This will be my daughter's first vehicle so I want to cover as many issues upfront as I can. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Welcome to TW....great place to hang out and were folks share their Toyota experiences and
    enthusiasm - welcome aboard!
To that, my first Gen Toyota Tacoma (1996) had 375K on an original motor and tranny and is still running today. If the maintenance has been kept up and yes, check out the timing chain but this shouldn't be a issue.

    Tacoma 1995-2012 4 Cylinder Chain
    1995-2004 V6 Belt
    2005-2012 V6 Chain

My advise would be to still go through the truck with detail to identify any pending or immediate issues. Hope this helps - good luck and welcome!
    Go Team TW

I have an ‘07 2.7l with 282,000 miles on it and it’s still perfectly reliable and strong. Timely maintenance is everything. The only thing I’ve ever had break on me, that wasn’t my fault, was a blown head gasket about 30,000 miles ago. While replacing the gasket we got a good look at the timing chain and it was like new, no slack.

For what’s it worth I’m on original alternator, starter, water pump, everything except transmission. And the transmission was definitely my fault.

If you approve of the truck or have a mechanic check it out, maintenance looks good, and the price is right I wouldn’t hesitate if that’s the truck y’all want.

Edit: Where are my manors — welcome to TW!

Thank you this is very helpful! Is the head gasket problem common? Was it very costly to repair?

I honestly think the head gasket issues were substantially more common on the early Gen 2 V6’s. I haven’t heard of many problems in this regard concerning the I4’s. My head gasket failure was a result of me letting my coolant level get low, wasn’t the fault of the truck, I don’t believe. The repair was relatively inexpensive — new gasket, studs, and labor combined were less than $900, if I remember correctly.

I have an 05 with 191932 miles the only engine issue I've had was 2 years ago the crankshaft pulley seal started leaking.

I replaced it myself for about $16.
