Harbor Freight tools thread.

Seems like it wouldn't take much to build your own. Heavy wall 2" square tubing...heavy wall 1 1/2" square tubing. A hole in the outside tube (or 2 if you want to double the pins)...several holes in the inside tube. Wide flat base. Small top plate with a couple bars on the edges to stop slide off. Little welding.

If I was going to do that, I'd REALLY overkill it just because. I'm not going to get them capacity tested, so I want to look at them and say "oh yea, no problem"...zero doubts.

I'm kind of thinking about the aluminum ones I linked above. $75. Might look if they have a 6 ton set in the same format.

 

There's also these if you want to really overkill it. Not sure it would fit under stock height...maybe. Someone might know the stock height of the LCA or something.

Looks like Big Red makes some that have a pin backup. I've had good luck with my floor jack from them:

Just returned my jackstands without issue. I got full price plus tax in a gift card, which I'm seriously considering NOT putting into the new HF jackstands.

I have to agree with the idea of not cheaping out on weight bearing equipment. Dodged a bullet this time...

 

There was a post I responded to a while back, poster asked how to decide on a cheap vs expensive tool that would be used very little. One of the deciding criteria I posted and use myself was “what is my risk of bodily harm if the cheap tool fails?”

 

Good deal on the return. Only issue I have with it is that you had to take a gift card and not cash. Which forces you to spend it there, which for a lot of us wouldn't be a problem, granted ...but still, if given a choice, I'd take cash over a gift card.

 

I never trust my life on any single item made in china. I'll have some kind of a backup.

The jackstands were called out specifically a few pages ago, it is assuring that this thread probably got some people to think about safety sooner rather than later. Torque wrenches and cheap welders yes, critical safety devices no. I have their cheap angle grinder but would never use their grinder wheels unfortunately as they are temptingly cheap but I am not hungry enough to try eating one lol.

 

I'm gonna guess the majority of the jack stands posted in here are made in China..

I'm going to guess most of the others are as well.

I plan on returning my recalled 3 tons, and using that GC and a 20% off coupon to get a pair of the 6 tons. Read somewhere it was worn out tooling and the problem has been corrected, I feel good about using a new pair. Fully understand where some of y'all are coming from with not trusting them but *shrug*

Edit: also plan on starting to throw the tires I take off the truck, when they're off, under it as a back up. Read that somewhere in here, good advice!

 

If I'm taking the wheel off of my truck to work on the truck, I push the wheel up under the truck, so if i'm up under there the truck would have to crush the tire and wheel before it can crush me

 

As I said, I'm thinking about the Jackco 3 tons. Can't speak for anyone else, but my main problem isn't so much made in China (although that don't exactly set my mind at ease), my main problem is the locking mechanism. I've never been a fan of those quick adjust/easy up (and down) jack stands. If I buy any to hold the entire truck, it will be the through pin design. I do have a couple blue ones from HF...don't know tonnage. I only use them for driveshafts and exhaust and other shit that I'm not going to be under.

 

Comment wasn't directed at you, more so those that are "I will never buy anything from china murica murica" China can make excellent products, it all comes down to quality control no matter what country it is made in.

Pin for locking makes great sense

 

Also curious about if any of you that own the HF jack stands ever bothered to bend the tab in like it says to do in the manual for safety?

 

I know 20 years ago when I worked selling parts *(not HF, but I would bet many products came from the same factory in China), we had a couple people come in and complain that jack stands had failed. Guess what, they never bent in the safety catch...
