So, I just ordered a new 2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road and I want to add the available locking tailgate accessory (OEM) for about 269.00 MSRP. My question is, since the truck has keyless entry and ignition, how does the tailgate unlock? Everything I read simply says you push the lock button twice on your key fob and as it unlocks all remaining doors (one push opens drivers doors) it will also unlock the tailgate. So does the tailgate lock also unlock as you approach the truck like the drivers door? Or is there a physical button on the fob you need to push? Or, am I all wrong thinking the doors unlock as you approach the truck? And in reality you do need to physically push the buttons to unlock doors but don’t need to insert anything into the ignition to start the truck?
    Confused?

Geez, reading this gave me a headache hahaha

I'm assuming since the door unlock switch activates with the tailgate switch while pressing the fob, I'm assuming the tailgate will also unlock when placing your hand by the driver's side door sensor when approaching it.

Doors don't unlock as you approach the truck. You push a button on the keyfob, or on my 2017 Limited the door will unlock when you grab the driver-side door handle WHEN the keyfob is in your pocket. If you have pushbutton start, you need to sit in the driver seat, step on the brake, and push the start button... again with the keyfob in your pocket.

So with the third gens, the keyless entry isn't quite how you imagine it. When you walk up to the truck you have can either use the unlock button on the key fob and
1 press = unlock driver door
2 press = rest of the doors + tailgate
OR you can put your hand on the door handle and a touch sensor will unlock the front door only (might be front and passenger on 2020s). You can change in your setting whether or not you want the keyless entry to unlock the driver or all the doors. (Again might be different as far as 2020 but will be about the same thing.) Either way if you just have it set to the front door you will have no problem!

You can also use the keyfob to program all of the doors to unlock with the door pull on either side, if you're into that sort of thing.

Or use the app and unlock/lock doors and start/stop the truck remotely. Kind of fun to play with for a day or two. Might have some use in really cold country, but not so much in SoCal.

No app on the 2017... But you CAN start without getting in and stepping on the brake IF you mash and hold the start button for a full 15 seconds.

Just the toyota app I down loaded from the app store.

Though I'm probably going to disable the remote connect to Toyota. It provides them with way too much information on your driving.

Ahh, of course. I've heard some pretty dreadful things about that. Good luck!

I have a 2020 Pro and bought the tailgate actuator from KTJO4x4. Much cheaper and maybe better quality than Toyota. Programmed the truck to unlock all the doors with one click (or grab either front door handle). This way, it unlocks all the doors, tailgate, and camper shell. Can't get any better than that when you use your truck for work and have to get in the back multiple times a day.

you can also set up ur tailgate to unlock by the stereo system go to ur truck's settings and choose wich one u want to unlock everytime u hit the unlock button on ur keyless remote it will unlock doors plus ur tailgate,or use the key that's attach to the keyless remote, save you some money for other mods

That's interesting. Maybe they've change something since 2017? The following are pages from my owner's manual, and I can confirm that mine works the way it's described in the manual.

EDIT: I checked and my truck does display the same screen that @caribe makaira pictured. But whichever way it is set, it seems that the door will only unlock when I physically touch the handle while the keyfob is in my pocket.
