The 6.5 dates all the way to the US wanting to change over from a 30.06 to a different round.

Since we are talking a AR platform with a 18” barrel. This is why I would prefer a 6.5 grendel over a .308.

    1. “For hunting at longer ranges, a .308 requires a longer barrel to gain the required velocity for expansion. A load with a similar bullet type has a muzzle velocity of 2,387 in a 16.5″ .308, while the same type cartridge in a 16″ 6.5 Grendel has a 2,580 fps muzzle velocity with a much higher ballistic coefficient and sectional density than the .308. A .308 with a short barrel is also concussively loud.“
2.” A 6.5 Grendel rifle from will tend to be less expensive than most .308 ARs of similar configuration and quality. If you already have an AR-15 or AR-15 lower, a 6.5 Grendel upper drops on in seconds, so to have a Grendel rifle you need only purchase an upper and magazines.
3.”A lighter, smaller diameter bullet can expand and penetrate better than a larger caliber bullet with poorer sectional density. This effectiveness is not a simple matter of bore size and bullet weight; it is a result of what shape the weight is formed into. For a .308 to have the same sectional density as a 6.5 mm, it would have to be longer and heavier than is possible chamber in a .308 chamber.”

Yea, both my pistols are 9mm, so that is nice. But just this hunting season, I was so worried about not forgetting the 5.56 ammo that I completely forgot to bring my .308 ammo  lol. I had 4 rounds in my mag that luckily was enough for that particular trip.

    1. We're talking Florida here. If you get a shot at hundred yards without being in a tree stand, that's a pretty rare thing, especially with hog hunting. SD and BC are therefore irrelevant to the conversation. But just to compare, and I checked, Sierra used 24 inch barrels to develop the data for both calibers, so all else being equal...lets compare a .264 130gr and a .308 220gr for SD and BC...
    .264 130gr SD: .266 BC: .510 @ 2400 FPS, but drops to .490 @2350 FPS
    .308 230gr SD: .331 BC: .629 @ 2100 FPS or above--drops to .624 down to 1700 fps

Also, regardless the length of the barrel, there's no way a case that holds twice the powder capacity is going to have a lower MV with a similar weight bullet unless it was deliberately light loaded.

I will concede, that a .264 bullet of the same weight and shape as a .308 bullet with the same muzzle velocity will be ballistically superior in just about every way, particularly at long ranges (300 to 1000 yrds, for instance). This is why I have a 6.5 Creedmoor rather than a .308 Win.

    2. Not especially relavent, but a fair point...countered by the ability to find 6.5 Grendel ammo in west BFE.

    3. Bullet expansion depends a lot on the bullet design and how hard the material it hits is. Considering the .308 has several blunt nosed options compared to the 6.5mm, that's six months of episodes for Myth Busters (this is why I believe a .458 or a 12ga slug would be a better hog killer). The second part of your statement is just plain wrong. A .308 180gr spitzer BT has a slightly higher sectional density .271 vs .266 for the .264 and a similar BC: .506 between 2700 and 1700 FPS vs the 130gr .264.

BTW, I'm having fun with this debate. You have me looking stuff up, doing research. It's taking my mind off waiting for my 6.5 to return home. So if I sound offensive, it's not intended.

This has been something I've been considering though. In piping, the larger the diameter of the pipe the less pressure it can hold unless you increase the wall thickness, so I've been wondering if the Remington Ultra Mag and the Winchester Short Mag can actually compete with the regular long magnum cases with sending a heavy bullet down range at a high velocity. Sure, you can use a short action which is stiffer which leads to better accuracy, but I wonder if it can stand up to the pressure of a max charged long magnum case.

Another fun fact: My Leupold LCS 40x45mm scope has 1/8th MOA clicks, as opposed to a majority of scopes that have quarter MOA clicks. It's now mounted on a 20 MOA pic rail base. So, considering it was more or less sighted in for 100 yards before, that means it needed to come down to be back on the paper at 100 yrds. With 1/8th MOA clicks, that's 8 clicks per MOA or 8 x 20 = 160 clicks down. I was thinking that's a lot of clicks, but damn if it didn't do it with some to spare. Still gonna bore sight it, but I bet it's going to be pretty close. Only variable being where the 6.5 Creedmoor is going to go over where the 6.5 BR was going, elevation-wise...possibly spin-drift-wise as well, but I don't think there going to be that much difference between them at 100 yrds.

The build is looking good. They just opened a new range not to far from me. 100,200,300 rifle and a 15 and 25 yard pistol. There is also a place to shoot skeet and sporting clay.

Thanks! I'm not terribly fond of how far the scope sits above the action--the closer to the bore the more accurate and all that--but I did discover that it is probably going to be more comfortable for me personally. I can use a lot more of my glasses and I can probably even wear my ear cups, which could be important with the muzzle break. With the AR and the old scope position on the 6.5, the cups got in the way of my cheek weld so I had to make due with just my plugs. People will probably hate shooting next to me now, haha.

Cool about the new range. I'm going to have to go all the way down to Myakka to the Manatee range to shoot over 100 yrds, but they have 1, 2, 3, 6, and 1000 yrds ranges there.

Once I got it set up right, the blades on the cutter head in the right position and the rotating shaft not too tight and lubricated, the case trimmer did an amazing job and it was a lot easier than the way RCBS designed it to work, let alone manually. Go me!
