33 inch tires?

If i put a 3 inch lift on my taco, will 33 inch tires be big enough to look nice? I'm not going mudding too much, but I would like the tires to look nice with the lift.

Sorry to thread jack, but I'm having a hard time understanding this whole tire thing. I read on another post that there is 33's then there is 285's. What's the difference, if any? Also, would I need larger wheels for this? I have a 09 DC 4x4 TRD O/R so I have the 16" wheels.

285s are a metric size and are not true 33s...actual diameter is 32.7 inches (close enough). True 33s are wider as well as a slightly larger diameter and open up a whole new can of pain-in-the-ass when solving your rubbing problems.

So can I run 285's on my stock wheels without any problems? By the way, I'm stock right now, but I'm going with a 3" lift.

Uh, 285s will fit on your stock wheels, yes, but "running" them is a different matter. You can bolt them to your truck, but even with a 3 inch lift they'll rub like a fucker and you'll need to trim and do some frame modification to eliminate it.

Don't even think about running 285s without a lift.

 

Actually, true 33's are not necessarily wider nor larger than a 285. There are WAY too many variations of "33" to make this statement. 33x9.50=narrower than 285. 33x10.50=narrower than 285. 285x16? 285x17? 285x18? 3 different sizes.

Your tires for example: 285/70/17 KM2=33", not 32.7"
33x12.50x15 KM2=32.8" (so-called "true" 33)

Check your math again... 285/70/17 or 285/75/16 KM2s are 32.7"

 

Pure math is what it is, but yeah, different tread designs result in small variations. KM2s may in fact be 33" total when new. Those are some bigass lugs.

Settle down cowboy...pure math IS what it is...numbers are numbers, but apparently I was mistaken about the BFG sizes.

So which number are they fudging? the Metric or Imperial rating on 285s? One of them has to be rounded.

 

I have never heard of any 285 measuring up to 33". They usually end up around 32.7".

 

Dont forget backspace. If you are going 285, or even 275 with stock rims, the width may rub on the inside. You may need rims with more backspace to offset the tire away from the upper control arms on the front.

But with increasing offset, you will encounter rubbing on the fenders when turning the wheel. Lots of people are running variations of rim, tire size, and fender trimming. Correct me if I am wrong, but in general anything wider than than 275/70 will require getting rid of front mud flaps, plus either new rims or trimming or both.
