    They're built in Japan homie.

I dropped a few hundred bucks on rust proofing and rubberized undercoating, and then promptly scraped a bunch of it off in the mountains. Should've stuck with fluid film. Did you do anything to protect your Tacoma? Or did you simply own a Tacoma in the Rust Belt and let nature do its thing?;)

This is one of the big reasons I bought my 4R over a new taco. Much better QC over there vs. in Mexico. Just a more well built vehicle in my opinion.

plus it still has the underpowered 4.0 vs that new 3.5. Catch me guzzling gas at 300k miles. Lol

Wellll mine's built in Texas and has a stickshift, which really allows you to access the guts of the 3.5, which live at the top of the rev range. If not, I would've really considered a 4Runner. I've always loved them regardless.

Hol'up, did you just say out loud on TW the 4.0 is underpowered compared to the new 3.5?:crapstorm:

If you think the 3.5 taco has a lot of power, that's prob the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. Go say that in another thread and see what they say.

I meeeean that was the point of my original comment, no? The shitstorm thing? No?

The new one has 42 more horses and identical torque, with better emissions and fuel econ. I'm not pretending my truck is something it's not, and I'm also saying that you kinda need a stickshift to get the full benefit of the new engine because the transmission programming in the automatic is laser-focused on fuel consumption. However it's practically not even an issue anymore because both Toyota and the aftermarket tuning has finally caught on and caught up. But I digress. At the end of the day yes, the 3.5 is more powerful than the 4.slow:rofl:

Why do people keep saying “because they are built in Japan”.

I’m not sure why that is relevant. Toyota could use the same frame in Japan as they can in Mexico. Where its assembled to me means nothing to me.

I did nothing to protect my Tacoma. That truck was so expensive I wasn’t dropping a dime extra on it. Its Toyotas responsibility to build a quality product.
Especially because Toyota knows its a problem and they’ve done nothing to correct it and they still over charge for substandard products and can get away with it only because of the cult following

BUT HEY free country ya’ll like it ya’ll can stick with it.

I deviated from Ford and got burned so Ima stick with what I know to be great in the future when I do get another truck.

Hopefully the next Toyota I get will be my Dads T4R TRD Pro :fingerscrossed: in the will. That is my fav SUV gotta admit.

I sense... melodrama? I mean cars are known to rust in the midwest, and Toyota did all the frame coating and recall and replacement shit, for free, for years. If you perceive it's too expensive that you can't or won't protect it, it's not Toyota's fault.

The vast majority of owners don't do the forums or the enthusiast thing, so it's not just a cult following propping them up. There has to be genuine quality. Were that not the case they'd be dime-a-dozen cheap and you'd hardly see old ones, kinda like Ford trucks. I've seen plenty of rusted-out Fords in my day, though I wonder how the aluminum trucks will hold up. Time will tell.

I have no experience with the 3.5 besides a 5 mile test drive. But both have no fucking power in my opinion. I would rather the 4.0 over the 3.5 because I know it’s a proven engine, reliable as fuck, and will take the beating that I give it. I love my 4runner though. Just wish it was v8 and a 6spd. One day

I've got nothing against the 4.0. Bulletproof as fuck. That sounds it would be fun and one hell of a build. Always like seeing the V8 4th gen Runners. Would you go for a Toyota V8 or an LS swap?

Tacomas (and most Toyotas) are remarkably average in most ways except for their reliability and mod-ability, the latter of which is a product of the market, and not of Toyota.

My Fords didn’t have the level of rust the Taco was developing.

I sold mine for several reasons. Maint costs were one and the frame rust issue just wasnt something I was willing to deal with. Its a nightmare to go through the frame replacement bullshit. Dealers were charging people thousands for broken shit during the replacement.

and Toyota does make an inferior frame. Sorry but thats been a proven fact since the Tacoma was released.

I do like the 4Runner and maybe one day I’ll own one. Tacoma... probably not.

It was a really hot looking truck though and I enjoyed it while I had it. It just didnt fit in my life anymore.
