I’m for this... there’s already plenty of excuses that pussies use to explain why they can’t handle combat.

I’m already thinking of suing the state for being shot at on I95 last week.
PTSD all over again. I’m afraid to drive to work now.

There should be a cop every quarter mile to protect me from hooligans. I didn’t even have time to grab my gun.

I’m triggered. Cars, guns and trigger fingers should be banned.

    Second opinion needed.

This seems like a dick comment and the guy is insinuating anyone that claims to be a Vietnam vet is lying about their service. Maybe just my interpretation?

Idk. I'm not going to judge, but there's a lot of people who put it on their placards and whatnot highwayside. Meanwhile, I thought that the VA had programs for folks who actually served, so...

My opinion only, based on thousands of hours bullshitting with my dad and my lifetime (literally, I was born in 1969) of hanging out with Korean War and Vietnam veterans.

Many vets who served in Vietnam were forced either directly or indirectly to feel shame for that service. It was socially unpopular, and in many places around the country service members were unsafe in small groups when in uniform. Dad said in his rotation home they made them change clothes in Hawaii and travel civilian flights to San Francisco so that they wouldn’t draw too much attention to themselves. He said it was bullshit - they were literally the only people (1972) without pork chop sideburns and short haircuts.

In the 1980s, movies like The Great Santini and Platoon started to draw attention to the plight of those who served and their experiences. Veterans groups did a better job of lobbying for acknowledgment of the sacrifices and heroism of those who served - regardless of the war’s popularity or righteousness.

Desert Storm changed EVERYTHING. When we came back from Saudi our money was no good. Anywhere. I never drank so much free booze in my life...which sucked because I’d become a lightweight in my time over there. Everyone loved us. And America started to come to grips with how it had treated its Vietnam veterans and began a long overdue series of apologies. Dad and his chapter of VVA motorcycle riders were even asked to be in a parade - and at best they’d simply been ignored up until then.

People started thanking him for his service when they’d NEVER done it before. THAT fucked him up a little.

I’m paraphrasing this part (because we were about half in the bag at the time) but he was of two minds. On the one hand, he was honestly touched and genuinely humbled by the outpouring. On the other, he wanted to say things to the effect of “where the fuck was all of this love in 1971 and 1972, jackass?”

(Figures do not include aircrew out of Guam, Thailand, or Blue Water Navy)

Millions of men and thousands of women served in Vietnam, and many many more served during it. While I will admit there are a lot who wore the uniform between ‘64 and ‘75 that claim the status of “Vietnam Era Veterans” - they can be spotted (and shamed) by those who were actually in theater and in harms way. The noticeable difference will be the distinct lack of the RVN Campaign and Vietnam Service medals. Some Americans (my father included) were awarded gallantry medals for combat service by south Vietnam itself.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_Service_Medal
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallantry_Cross_(South_Vietnam)

So, what JEEPNIK seems to be referring to is that during and in the first two decades after the war, people were hush hush about their service. This is mostly true. In the post-Desert Storm “support our troops” America we live in now, they’re more willing to admit it. Is it as rampantly fraudulent as he seems to think it is? I doubt it - both the Vietnam Veterans organizations and the VA run a clear distinction between what is a Vietnam Veteran and a Vietnam Era veteran.

Much like any of us who were in the military post 9/11 and deployed, and those who simply got a NDSM and GWOT medal for just showing up and doing their time without actually making a deployment.

WE KNOW who they are - we can tell. And that matters just as much to us.

I dont think he is insinuating anyone who claims VN service is lying.
However..... At one point he VA did in fact have more VN vets receiving benefits than the DOD had records of.
I'm sure NPRC fire had something to do with this, and helped the scammers.

I have met people who claimed VN service, and claimed to be in units that did not exist at the time, or knew almost nothing about the unit they claimed. One guy claimed to be a helo pilot, but never heard of Ft Wolters.

Sadly, there are liars in every generation and every war.

My parents met when grandfather was stationed there teaching. I spent most summers of my childhood in Mineral Wells.

Why were you there? I have a suspicion. PM if you want

I was stationed at NAS JRB Ft Worth and the Marines I worked with went to the range out there. I tagged along once cause I was bored, I quickly got more bored and was happy to go home with my Cpl that was a range coach and didn't have to stay on site all week like the Marines shooting

I'm sure back in the day it was a bit cooler, and the Vietnam War museum that's right there is doing good work.

    HM?

Not the reason I thought, but close. I was thinking maybe you were a Bee.
I was stationed at Ft Worth for a while, VMGR-234 and NMCB 22

The Museum / wall has only been there a few years, but the planning and such goes back almost 20 years.
Base has really gone to pot, like so many abandoned places do. It's been sad to watch.

I never knew it as a military base, it closed long before I started going there in '82. My aunt worked out there, me and a cousin would ride with her in the morning, play around and explore all day, then ride home at night.

    different times.
