So I did my first tire rotation on my truck. It was a 5 tire rotation. I took the truck for a ride and noticed that three of the four tires I was driving on were having some increase in tire pressure as I drove. The passenger front tire pressure did not budge. But it suddenly occurred to me that I had rotated the front passenger tire to the spare so maybe it was reading the pressure on the spare.

So I read how to do the reset. I turned on my engine, hit the reset button and the tire pressure blinked three times then went out. So I took my finger off the button and the TPMS on the display remained blank for each tire:

So I went on a drive so the TPMS could relearn. Drove 30 minutes. And nothing: the TPMS just remained blank for each tire.

    What am I doing wrong?

I don't know about the reset procedure, but there is no sensor in the spare tire. I would switch that one back and reset again.

There is no sensor in the spare? So they expect us to switch out the sensor when we want to do a simple rotation?

No, you just don't rotate in the spare. When you take the truck in for the Toyota Care tire rotation, they don't touch the spare tire.

Wow. So basically I can't do 5 tire rotations with a Tacoma?

What I don't understand about this is that a tire shop did my last rotation and it was a 5 tire rotation.

You may drive more to get sensors "working".
If you lost your sensors , you would've got a warning light on the dash.
Sometimes TPM control unit take its time.
You have abiliy to add 5th sensor to Tpm control unit to use with the spare.

Wow. I also found another thread about this and someone suggested you might have to drive over 70mph.

My spare came with sensor, but the truck seems to be only capable of addressing / sorting 4 TPMS. I’ve never bothered with a 5 tire rotation so no idea if the 5th is actually stored and just not seen through normal program methods. But I can pickup all 5 with SDR.

No advantage to a five tire rotation. While you get the use of five tires, you end up buying five tires and...paying for crap like TPMS change over. Just rotate four, check your spare regularly and go for 10 years easy.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Spare tire is always for TEMPORARY USE so you can get moving and get the regular one repaired. That is unless you replaced it with a full size spare. It's not meant to be driven on as a regular tire. Also, per manual, spare does not come with tpms sensor.

Spare has different rim and such... it’s not supposed to be used regularly.

just do 4 tire rotations, and replace the spare when it expires. it’s not that big of a deal

No I was able to talk to the guy who did my rotation. He used some device to reset the TPMS quickly and he said I did have one in each tire.

No, mine doesn't. I have Ray 10 SCSs on all 5 tires. I'm doing 5 tire rotations.

And there was not a different rim on my spare to begin with.

IIRC, the reset is a small button under the dash, and maybe he lied or had no idea about the 5th tire

Zero chance of that. He is a close friend of mine, definitiely rotated the spare (it was its first time in the lineup and still had a little marker ink from when it was new on it) and said he did not change out my TPMS.

He had a different explanation of what is going on.
