Securing Long guns in a truck?

How do you guys secure your long guns and hand guns in your tacomas? I hate locking my gun in the truck since there's nowhere to lock it to keep someone from simply knocking the window out and taking it.

 

In their gun cases......in the backseat (access cab) and usually covered by a blanket so people don't take notice to what they are and want to break in.

Legally (here in PA anyway) - I think they're supposed to be locked up separately inside the vehicle unless you have a conceal carry license. I have a conceal carry license so I'm technically legal to carry them unlocked in the truck.

On a DC it would be mice if there was a way to secure them behind the back seats. I thought I saw it on here somewhere that someone had done it. Basically fold down the seats put the gun in a rack, lock it, and then put the seats back up.

 

IMO leaving a firearm in a vehicle is irresponsible...

 

I'm pretty sure everyone here is talking about TRANSPORTING them....

 

I do the same if I have to run into the store and grab a drink, Here in a car/ truck its locked truck guns unloaded and out of sight. If you add a trigger lock its technically "stored and secure" According to the letter of the law.

I'd kinda like to see a long gun in stored like that

I saw some vaults that either replace or go inside of the center console. It would not work for a long gun though. They were diy stuff here someplace...

 

yea, irresponsible is wrong..

illegal (everywhere i've lived) is more accurate.
storing anything of value in your car (in any public area) is irresponsible.

I store mine in the open bed in a case or blanket till I reach my destination.

Anyway, most long gun cases fit in the back seat of my DC pretty easy. I keep most everything back there. In NY they just need to be unloaded unless you are carrying a handgun with a concealed carry permit. My Varmint rifle case does not fit behind the seat. I have a locking SKB case that I cable lock to a bed d-ring and lock if I go in to a store for a snack or bottle of water. It's covered by the bed cover....out of site out of mind.....

 

Yea, here we go, the thread started by trying to find the best responsible way to secure your firearm while transporting it so it will not be in plain view and will turn into a gun rights rage. Some of the strictest States-New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, California, Hawaii, Maryland all have laws regulating the transporting of weapons but none of these States prohibit transporting weapons that are unloaded and secured. I am also curious what States if any don't allow it. I like behind or under the back seat or in the tool box in the bed. The seat option requires some modification. I always have to plan ahead because I don't want to start putting it in the tool box in the parking lot of the shopping center and advertising to everyone when I have to run in to pick up something that was texted to me while I was in the treestand. Front tint also helps.

 

And, I believe they are unneccessarily confusing so that just about anything can be claimed. Here in PA I transport hunting firearms, both long guns and hand guns regularly. They are of course unloaded, and almost always covered by soft case or blankets. But, the fact of the matter is, a pick-up heading to or from northern tier PA during October/November/December will exhibit hunting apparel, camp provisions, decals, license plates, 4-wheelers or, even more obviously, game. Any of these are blatant advertisements that the vehicle likely is carrying firearms. Most of the trips are long enough to require at least a gas and restroom break. I usually get one last diner meal before climbing the last hour of two-lane to the camp.

This is a great question, and I will appreciate any good comments and recommendations for safe secure storage. I have an access cab. I no longer have a rack hanging on the rear window (stopped that in the 80's). This past weekend I had two shot guns and a prized Brittany in the access quarters. I never parked where I, or my partner could not visually monitor the vehicle.

 

I transport my guns fairly often, I keep them in cases, with the bolt faces on me. I also keep my fur coated razor blade in the truck...she knows the score and who is and isnt allowed in our truck.

 

Then you've never lived anywhere but the extreme west and/or extreme east coasts. CA & HI do not constitute "everywhere" sir. I don't want to be pushy or argue the 2nd Amendment on a truck forum, especially since the topic of the thread is a good one to discuss. However, I don't think it's fair for you to decry anyone who keeps a gun in their truck as irresponsible, let alone illegal, when you clearly have not researched the topic.

From what I've seen the best bet for handguns is a console vault. Longguns are a bit more tricky, DC guys can maybe fit them behind the rear seats? I have an access cab, and removed the rear console to make more space for when I transport hunting rifles and gear (that rear console is worthless for storage and takes up a ton of space). I realized afterward that with the console gone I can keep a rifle in the under seat storage bins. There's only room for one, and it has to be smaller, but it works. Other than that us AC guys are pretty limited, good window tint and a blanket over them seems to be the only option.

 

Breaking into a vehicle/home and stealing shit is irresponsible. I guess LEO's should remove that 12gauge sitting in between the front seats of their cruisers, and take there AR clones out of the trunk too.

As long as it's secured properly and not obvious, what is the issue? Crooks get lucky all the time. If they find cash, guns, identities, or grandmas old broach, they are happy.

 

Those AR's and shotguns that you see in police cars are in locked racks. And I'm looking for a place to store my patrol rifle during the day. I have to carry it to and from work and am not always able to go straight home after work to secure it in a safe. I'm thinking about installing a locking system like I have in my patrol vehicle on the roof. They sell them on galls for between 200 and 300 dollars. Another option I'm looking at is some kind of lock... but I want something stronger than a simple cable lock.

 

Well you are a little more than a casual user. I would recommend one of the in-bed drawer style tool boxes. I know a couple cops in the area that use them and I have seen cruisers and SWAT vehicles with similar set-ups. They are water proof and lock. That might be the ticket for everyday use....

They arn't cheap though....
