I think the Warns are waterproof and the Smittybuilts are not.

Well it looks like both companies have IP68 waterproof offerings.

that may be so, but that doesn't mean that the quality control that each company will let pass is the same.

True, not saying the winches are equal. Thats just what ive heard. Im just sticking with my smittybilt until it craps out if ever. Things been great so far. Probably will end up getting a new one if this one dies anytime soon.

A lot of things are made overseas now. Warn has always been the industry standard growing up. Everyone was running Warns way back in the day and it seems there are more offerings today. I see a lot Smittybilts running around now, almost as many as Warns. I just need something dependable and reliable if I ever get stuck in a hard spot, or soft spot in the mud. Jeannie and I would a lot more solo riding if I had a winch.

6K, 8K, 10K or 12K winch? Significant price jump for the higher load ratings!

I was concerned about using one in the recovery point on my 4xI bumper. I did chamfered the holes a little. When I look at this link, they show one passing through a recovery point. Is this considered OK? https://www.googleadservices.com/pa...iHsIvI2cfpAhWqUt8KHXcFDtgQ9aACegQIDRBG&adurl=

I'd run a shackle through the recovery point and hook the soft shackle to the hard shackle. The hole in the recovery point could be sharp on the edges if un-chamfered.

Ive always heard 1.5times your vehicles weight is what you should go with as far as rating. Mines about double.

Makes sense. What if no sharp edges? I'm known at work to be able to find a burr on an egg.

I was looking at a 9.5 or 10 with synthetic line.

I guess if you're sure that hole is chamfered and won't cut the soft shackle, then I don't see the problem in recovering that way.
