    Hi all,

I have a new Tacoma Off-Road and noticed when cruising it will stay in the lowest gear even when speeding up a little with slight acceleration with cruise on or off, probably worse with cruise on because it likes to stay in that low gear and I will feel it bogging down like when driving a manual and you have the gear to high for what speed you are in.

I might be searching the wrong thing but didn't see a ton on the bogging down issue but did find a tone on the shifting issues.

Is the bogging issue a common issue as well for these trucks?

It doesn't bother me a whole lot but a lot of times with a slight grade going up in the road it won't shift and will just kind of kick a little and feel like it just needs to change to 5th gear and get out of 6th in order to not bog down.

I assume this is a common issue and something I will deal with but just wanted to bring it up since I didn't see a lot of bogging issues but did see a lot of searching for the right gear issues.

Common. It's working as designed. You can put it in S4 to help, use the ECT button which helps with throttle response and delays shifting until higher rpms, but unless you want to fork over $$$ for OVtune to actually change the tune, you just have to learn to work with it. Basically keeping rpms up, keep it in s4 if you're at the right speed, or S3 if you're going non-highway speeds. if you just let it do its thing, it'll always go for the highest gear

Edit: lot of threads regarding regearing and OVtune. I would take a look at them and see if it's something you would want to do

Honestly it's difficult for us to know what exactly you mean by "bogging". Explain in more detail your speed/rpm and terrain and what're you're witnessing and what you're expecting the truck to do.

Perhaps the best thing for you to do is go test drive a different Tacoma at the dealership and see if the problem is unique to your vehicle.

    Good luck.

That has been my solution so far lol. Just never experience that bogging in an automatic vehicle.

these engines/transmissions were designed with efficiency in mind. The power is there, you just have to ask a little harder for it. These engines come alive at higher RPMs, just the way they were designed.

...Any and all automatic transmissions...driver steps on gas pedal>ECU thinks "aahhh more fuel?!">shifts to lower gear to increase RPM allowing more air to combust (per piston cycle) with fuel-dump made by driver>vehicle go zoom...

Automatic transmissions with "S/Sport Mode"...driver slaps drive selector to "S/Sport Mode -/+ down to gear needed for holding RPM to 3.5k>floors gas pedal>slap dive selector + to next gear limit just before redline>ECU has no time to think except react "what the fuck are you...oh...ok...wow...that's kinda nice actually"

I will check out the OVtune. I’ve heard of it but never looked into it.

I’ve noticed it happening when there is a slight grade going up in the road and I’m going 40 to 45 mph maybe. I’ll see the exact speed I’m going next time it happens.

I just don’t want to hurt the truck by allowing it to be in too low of a gear and have it have this bogging down or stalling out type of thing going on.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with my particular truck just don’t want to hurt it because it’s an awesome truck that I don’t plan on getting rid of for a long time.

Its the first thing i noticed when my truck was new, and had nearly zero miles on it. After 1500 miles the issues was not nearly as noticeable. I think the auto 6 speed began up, and down shifting quicker/smoother when it had to. For average driving its very normal now. For towing i leave it in the ect mode and click it in the S mode for steeper grades. I really can't complain very much.

You wont hurt it, its never going to lug it self to death, not on the stock software. I once tuned a 2015 Jetta 1.8t, the added boost did not do well with the economy auto trans and sometimes in a very specific spot, you could actually lug the engine. It felt like it would violently tear itself apart.

I have a Pedal Commander which gives me many choices on how my truck drives. Easy plug and play. Although I have never had any of the issues people write about on the auto tranny. Check it out or go OVtune.

I think you may be using the term "bogging" incorrectly if you're associating it with a low gear...because too high of a gear at a slow speed driving on an incline drops RPM (therefore torque) and increases likelyhood of stalling--from bogging.

Your truck sounds a lot like mine, I’ve have the same issue since day one. It feels as if the truck shudders, like when you let the clutch out too quickly and don’t give it enough gas in a stick shift, but it’s an automatic. I feel it mostly with low rpms, around the 40-60 mph range, though I do feel it occasionally at other speeds. I’ve taken it in to the dealership multiple times, only to be told it’s normal, and they can’t find anything wrong. Fast forward almost two years later, I’m now on the fuel pump recall list, I really hope that’s the problem and a new fuel pump solves my issue. Also OVtune’s tunes really didn’t help much with my trucks issue, I still feel the shudder across every tune, stock, 1.05, 1.05.1, 2.0 betas.

i think the issue is just that the truck wants to stay in too low of a gear causing it to have that stallish/bogging out type issue. I don’t think anything is actually wrong with the trucks hardware at least on mine.

Just use ECT PWR mode and let her eat at 4000 RPM on each gear shift. Just gotta put your foot into it.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
I have setup my ScangaugeII to show current gear and this thing loves to get into 5th as soon as possible (that means going 40mph in 5th). Yours is consistent with mine. So between shift points and rear diff gearing, it does feel like you're begging down until light tap on throttle brings gear down.

As others suggested, pedalcommander, ovtune or regearing would probably make it feel more peppy.
