Got to work on the hundy this afternoon.

After pulling the alternator, I had a mess with oil and grit soaked wiring harnesses.

Took the old wiring apart and cleaned it.

It wouldn't take much for the wires to start breaking down after running in the grit.

Cleaned the wires and wrapped in F4 Silicone Tape. Then put the wrapped wires in flex conduit and wrapped it again.

All wires will have a double layer of F4 Silicone Tape

The idea is to have a wiring harness that is airtight, waterproof, and oil proof.

Took the newly rebuilt Denso 100a alternator from Rock Auto apart to check out the brushes.

I ordered a spare set of brushes to keep for when those wear down some years from now.

In case I need to swap brushes some weekend in the future, I don't want to playing a guessing game to figure out the correct type.

Put it back together and did some polishing just for fun. I don't do it enough to get to be good at it.

I will spray it with a clear coat so the aluminum finish will be easy clean and to keep it from becoming ratty looking years from now.

Out of the blue, I get a paycheck from my company after being laid off for almost three months.

    Nice.

Why didn't you just rebuild it yourself?

Looks like they used the old stuff with new bearings and brushes anyway

If you can find a place local that supplies the rebuild parts theres a place local to me that has all the parts in stock 21 bucks to replace the brushes and voltage reg in my old camrys alt

I paid 60 some bucks for new bearings brushes, voltage reg, diodes, and stainless hex screws (he plays on the beach and it was crusty in there) on my buddies 4 runners alt

Because sometimes it’s just worth it for a warranty.

I might rebuilt the old one and keep it as a spare. I did rebrush the Tacoma alternator. But it only had 70,000 miles.

Replacing the alternator was kind of a spur of the moment, last minute thought, since it was easy to reach with the rack and front diff out. When I saw the condition of wires, I had to do something about it.

Reminds me of the 03 Dodge Cummins Harness I cleaned up. It threw a rod through the side of the block right where the ECU mounts. Poured oil on every surface of the bay and the harness had some pretty bad damage. So that F4 Silicone Tape holds up pretty well? I was trying to do things the right way on that rebuild but I was going in 50/50 with a buddy. So electrical tape it was....
