MPGs on 2020 TRD OR 4x4????

Not saying that it will be more efficient, but you can get the same efficiency out of it depending on your road conditions. If you're sitting on stock tires with a good tailwind on flat ground or a slight decline, you can definitely get the same fuel efficiency as going 65. I've done it. Even with my 5.29's with +1000lbs weight loading and 285's. Albeit not for very long, but it's possible.

 

Yes, you got the same efficiency in those conditions as driving slower in normal conditions. I understand what you mean now. However, had you gone slower in those exact same conditions you would have gotten even better efficiency. Lower speed, greater mileage.

 

True, and yea I don't understand why people try to fly that fast anyways. I've never seen a speed limit sign that said 80 anyways. I've learned to enjoy the slow ride since my truck 90% of the time doesn't want to go faster than 70mph and trying to squeeze out an additional 0.5mpg, cause it gives me something to focus on during long drives.

While I agree that you can't expect 20mpg or higher on this truck, even stock that's expecting a lot, I do understand wanting to try to make the most of your efficiency. After all, it does increase your range and allows you to go further away from any infrastructure before you gotta turn around.

 

Try driving around for a few days with ECT on and see if you notice a difference. I drove my 2020 for a whole week with ECT on and everything else being the same, I went from 16-17 mpg to a consistent 19-20. My commute is 50/50 freeway/highway and pretty hilly for most of it.

 

It’s the Interstate speed in some of the better of the States.

 

Range is a solid point not oft engaged here though. People ask why I care if I get 18 mpg rather than 13 mpg. Well, with 20 gallons that’s a range of 360 miles or 260 miles. Hmm, why would I want to be able to drive 100 more miles between fill ups? Or why would I want to get 95 extra miles out of a 20L gas jug rather than 68...? Gas mileage matters very much. The terds on here don’t seem to think of anything but “looks” and what the other boys will think.

 

We have speed limits as high as 85mph here in Central Texas, most people are driving 90mph+, the Taco is really working at 90, and fuel efficiency is totally in the tank.

 

Interesting. Then I genuinely ask the question, what vehicles ARE built to serve fuel efficiency at 90mph+? I would wager even a Prius probably has significantly lower efficiency at 90 than at 65.

 

There are none, but this is Texas, it is not a PC state, and burning fuel helps the local economy, lol!

Recently traded in my 2017 TRD Sport 2wd dcsb for a 2020 TRD OR 4x4 dcsb, gas mileage is a huge difference between the two. With the TRD Sport, my mpg avg. was around 22 city and highway. Now with the OR, it’s 17 mpg or so. There’s definitely a break in period. I’m expecting to be in the 20s once the truck reaches 5k miles.

 

Geography and elevation changes definitely make a huge impact my normal daily commute is relatively flat and it is uncommon for me to get less than 19.5-20mpg as a tank average. I also spend most of my time under 55mph. I’ve got a 2019 TRD OR DCSB AT with 24,XXX miles so it’s broken in well. Sorry to post in a 2020 thread but I find this conversation interesting.

 

Others may differ, but I have the same 2020 TRD OR and avg between 16.5 to 17 combined. It is stock except for tires (265/75R16s). The TRD Sport 2WD is by design much more efficient on fuel. One thing I did find that will even make your numbers worse is that, with the OEM tires, the speedometer reads a little high (by approx 1.5%), so your fuel mileage is actually even a bit worse than it seems.

Here in Austin there is a lot of stop and go traffic and moderate hills, it is not uncommon for me to take 45 minutes for a 15 mile commute, and outside the city limits, the highway speed limits are also higher, especially on the toll roads (up to 85mph posted speed limits), this also reduces the mpg.

Although the truck will loosen up a bit after 5k miles, I don’t believe your expectations of obtaining 20mpg is realistic unless you drastically change your driving style, avoid traffic, and only drive under 55mph downhill with the wind to your back.

Just driving on 45-55 mph on town and secondary roads here i average 21.5 mpg. Truck now has my 265/70r 16 a/t tires it. Had come with the 245/75 16 all season tires. I think it was slightly better.

 

What?! California has the largest economy in the country! But no matter. I liked South Dakota when I was there too. Most states have a lot to love and some things to improve. Except Kansas. Mountaineering in Kansas sucks balls.

 

Don't tell that to my last truck (200K miles; mint engine when I traded it). Coasting in neutral is more efficient than coasting in drive because there is no load. Does the extra 0.2 MPG matter? Probably not.

 

Coasting in neutral is the same as idling. Costs fuel.

Coasting in gear shuts fuel injectors and costs no fuel.

Both have their moments, but engine braking up to stops along with breaking is most fuel efficient.

 

The truck has DFCO which shuts off fuel flow when coasting in gear, if you shift to Neutral then you are bypassing that and using more fuel.
