Unfortunately, you paid the "Sugarhouse tax" on mountain bikes. They go missing from there every night. Whole city is lousy with bike thieves, but Sugarhouse is one of the hotspots.

Unfortunately, you'd be in 100,000x times more trouble for possessing one of those, let alone using it, than the thief ever would be.

Plus a lethal range of up to 100m is a little rough for a neighborhood setting you care about.

Yea, luckily the bike I just ordered isn't at my house yet. I would have been pissed to loose a $2500 bike.. It just sucks that he took the time to figure out how to open our back sliding gate (somewhat complex for a new person). Browsed through the garage, and then decided to browse the back patio. You can tell he is somewhat used to doing this kind of thing. I am glad he didn't take my wife's expensive road bike (~$2000). That was hanging up, but I don't think he knew the brand so it didn't jump out at him.

I am also glad, our dogs are trained enough to not leave the yard. They explored our driveway but came back in and then went inside.

The officers that came over said that, if this guy put that much effort into an actual job, he would probably be a successful person.

    Funny how that works.

What brand is your wife's bike? Seems from my observations that as long as a bike "appears" to be medium to top dollar, they'll take it and ask questions later.

It is a Rei CoOp bike bike that she got a couple years ago. It is all carbon fiber, and black/ red. Has some decent components on it for what it is and we got it for a huge discount. It doesn't really have any brand labels on it so its hard to tell what brand it is. I think the guy saw the Trek hard tail and was like ' Trek' sounds like an expensive bike.

I also think since most of our bikes are hung up on the wall, he probably made a judgement call that it would be too risky to take it off the wall without making too much noise. He definitely browsed the bikes we have on the wall.

I know that one. That's a good looking bike. Trek def has the brand recognition though.

Based on the SLCPD call for service log I just checked, you aren't the only one that got hit last night.

At the end of the day, its just a hunk of metal. Not gonna smoke a dude over a bike that's worth far less than your defense lawyer bill would add up to.

BUT considering mine reside inside my house, that changes the equation...

I am curious how much legal trouble you would be in if you shot/ killed someone who entered your house/ property? If I was awake, and I saw the guy trying to steal our bikes, I think I would have hit him with a piece of pipe from the garage, but not killed the dude.

I think in California, the intruder can sue the home owner for doing something like that.

Entering your house and entered your property are very different things under Utah self defense laws.
It would not be easy/possible to legally defend someone who killed an intruder in their backyard. (Don’t take that as defense of thieves. Every single one of them should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell).
But, if that same intruder tries to or succeeds in coming inside the home, game over, decision made.

Anyone entering my property to commit a crime already has the mind set to break established laws and boundaries. I have no idea if they will escalate the crime to endanger my family's lives. I will take appropriate measures to stop them immediately. I'm from Texas and we do shit a bit differently there. Have a nice day......
