Hi all, I'm really struggling between the Snugtop Rebel and the Leer 100XR for my 2020 Tacoma. They have similar features with Leer being a little less expensive. My hang up on the Rebel is the new design where the bottom of the topper kind of bubbles out. Just can't picture how that will look. Does anyone have any feedback or photos they can share of the new Rebel design? Or just your experience with Leer or Snugtop in general? Who would've known this would be such a tough choice. Any feedback is much appreciated!
    Thanks!

Not sure what you mean by the bottom "bubbling" out, but here some shots of one of my Pro.

My honest opinion on canopies? They all suck and leak and have shoddy workmanship, but there's nothing else out there. Pick one that has the features you want, from a good dealer that will support it. I had to take mine back four times to get it 90% weather resistant, and it still leaks if it's raining hard. I put up with the off-center mount holes and the sloppily riveted serial plate.

Going to have to do a bunch of paint correction to fix the hackjob Snugtop did on the paint.

Snugtop.jpg Thanks for your opinion! Sorry to hear about the problems you've had. I hope they make it right for you. I think it looks awesome in the photos!
Check out where I have circled in this photo. Yours is not like that. The one at the dealer I visited is like that so not sure what to think. I think you'll be able to see what I'm talking about.

I had a Snugtop rebel on my 2nd gen Tacoma that leaked during heavy rain. I’ve had my current Snugtop rebel for a few years and it doesn’t leak at all. The installer did apply silicone in a few spots. I love it, works great for keeping my tools protected.

Bump. I'll be interested in opinions here also as I'm finally seriously shopping for a short bed hard shell but have always been nervous about mounting a RTT. I know tons of people have them but when I look at the specs, they aren't actually rated for much weight. Just my own, personal neurosis

I'm with you on the RTT but if you go to Leers website they are now selling RTTs! Go figure.

Snugtop Rebel. Fit and finish are supposedly a bit nicer than the Leer's, but I've never had a Leer to compare to.

Just got my 100XR installed this morning. All is well so far. I went with Leer only because I bought a used one for my f150 and it worked out well and my dad had a snug top on his f350 and it seemed like he had to take it back to the dealer a couple times for adjustments. You probably can’t go wrong with either brand.

With Snugtop you can get a reinforced roof which will support up to 500lbs static. Looks like I only paid $85 extra on mine for it.

Honestly, if I were to do it all over again, and I were going for a RTT, I would do a tonneau cover and a bed rack instead. I built a sleeper setup in mine, but I have mild regrets now I didn't go the other route. RTT + Rack + Tonneau would be a fair bit more expensive, but a better setup in the end IMO. Lighter, stronger, can mount recovery gear.

That seems to be a feature of the ones sized for full-size trucks. You won't get that on a Tacoma.

Regarding the leaking, I'm good for now I guess. It rains a lot up here in Seattle, and when I first got it I was parking it outdoors and we had a few weeks of nearly monsoon level rain, so I don't consider that typical. That being said, when I drop $3k on something, I don't expect to open the tailgate and find a literal pool of water in the bed. The dealer I bought it from went above and beyond to try to fix it. I place the blame solely on Snugtop's workmanship, not them. They got it to a point where I'm comfortable keeping it, otherwise I would have forced them to take it back.

That's a good point. That was really the main thing steering me away from Snugtop. Definitely understand. I would have been pretty disappointed.

Thank guys! This is really helpful. I'm sure I will be very happy with either option, but good to get the feedback and your personal experiences. And the pictures!! They are all awesome! Here's a picture of mine. I have some work to do...

The leaking? I wouldn't say that's a Snugtop exclusive. You can find horror stories for any of the main fiberglass brands.

I was also torn between the two and ended up going with the 100XR, mostly based on the looks and a little on the price (Leer was cheaper than the Snugtop in my area). There were some imperfections in the paint and Leer installed the Thule rails on the wrong sides, but the dealer took care of both of those and gave me a partial refund. The only leaks I have are coming from the Tacoma's bed. I love having the sliding windoors as they allow for easy access to items in the bed and ventilation for the dog when she sleeps back there. Leer was projected 4-week wait, but in took only 3-weeks. Snugtop was 6-8 weeks they said.

Took this setup down to the Ozarks this past week and we didn't have any issues. We got caught in some pretty serious storms too.

I have the rebel and absolutely love it. Carpeted, pet screen, pop lock, drop down front window.

I had the rebel on my pro. Went off road, drove across the country twice, loved it.

Off topic, I couldn't help but notice your avatar picture of a WRB WRX (assuming with the WRX painted side skirts). Bugeye or blob?

If so, it brings my back to my Subaru days :)

It's the '03 bugeye I used to have. Sold her after I got the Taco. At 174k miles she was becoming more work than I had patience or skill for. Still miss that car. Glued to the road with summer tires, slayed in the snow with winter tires.

We've got 4 field trucks, all have Leer camper shells on them, Overall I've been content with their functionality.

    Things to watch for:
The mounting hardware is designed to interface with the bed rails, and the bolts that tighten the shell down are under a sheer force (they don't sit on the same plane as the shell, about 5 degrees off) and they like to break with time. The proper torque spec doesn't seem to exist.

Our 4 trucks are out bouncing down gas pipeline ROWs all day M-F. They've all had their campers for about 1 year, and ever single bolt has snapped.
The trucks are operated by adults, but just saying, keep an eye on the mounting hardware / check for proper torque.

The back corners where the shell wraps over the bedside likes to crack (likely from lose mounting hardware)

The trucks get an ungodly amount of dust in the campers, invest in the tailgate seal kit.

We went with the Leer shells largely because of the cost. To get a nice clean looking shell with the flush mounted windows was about $200 cheaper / shell.
Buying 4 shells, yea, that was a real consideration.

I've had three Subarus. An 04 WRX with an EJ207, GT30r, E85, 6 spd making 500whp. Then my two STis that where pretty much stock. An 05 and 16. Loved those cars.

Again, sorry about tread jacking OP.
