Your unique mod on the 1st Gens

This might help. This is from a '03 Wiring manual. To me it looks like the shifter receives 12V from the circuit with the "GAUGE" fuse. Then the shifter outputs 12V to the respective shift positions inputs on the Engine Control Module (P R D 2 L), each fed by it's own wire. Perhaps those lines could be tapped for the power side of an LED?

 

the EWD for the trucks that had the cluster lights should point you in the right direction. typically they go through a junction block that you can add more wires too to get the signal where you want it

 

Yes I have the one for a 99. If you look at the attached diagram everything with a *3 is for column shift. There is a resistor pictured between the P and D indicators within the combination meter. I'm not sure why that is, maybe to make one brighter than the other?

the ECT wire signal also comes from the A/T indicator switch, so those wires could already be near the console shifter.
Everything seems to be at IK3, which is under the right kick panel. I just don't know if they get any closer to the combination meter or not.

 

Interesting. Is the 'D' indicator a different color? Like white instead of amber color filter or something like that. Maybe that would explain the resistor. Like you said, to dim it to keep it from overpowering the rest of the illumination.

Been following this thread for a while and am pretty impressed with everything! Though I don't have a taco, I will upload some mods I made to my 2001 Tundra shortly...

I did the same, except I used the ABS/CRUISE/RR DIFF LOCK lens to the left of the tachometer. I used them to indicate what mode of 4WD I’m in.

 

Several interior storage mods to my 2001 tundra with about 100 hours of work and about 200 ounces of coffeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Gearing up for some alone time in the wilderness!

Removed rear (sucker) seats and made storage area with drawers

Added a pullout (reversible) camp table

Made drawers out of wood putty, glue, and brads...and some pieces of wood. Painted with 87 coats of primer, 102 coats of rhino liner.

Hid the fire extinguisher under the driver's seat so if I need it in a pinch, I'll have to remember first where it is...

Hidden compartment for (guns) or really skinny person.

Added carpet, eye bolts for storage bin tie down points (or foreplay), and spray painted the carpet because I'm an idiot and didn't buy black auto carpet like I should have. Also...notice the hidden gun/smuggler compartment...neither did anyone else.

Nice Job! So the lamps were already in place, just not used in the stock tacoma? Or did you make a custom lens for those that say "4WD high" and "4WD Low"?

Lamps were already there. I don’t have a diff lock or ABS On my truck so I intercepted the grounding signal at one of of the cluster connectors. That lens is completely custom, I made it in Photoshop and it’s made of several layers of projector transparency film.

How did you do yours? That center spot is where the PRNDL indicators are on column shift trucks.

 

That's awesome. I didn't know you could make those lenses just from a printer and transparency film. I wonder if any I have any unused lights in the cluster already. I'm not sure if you seen a previous post of mine that has more details on how I did it, see the quote below. I feel lame quoting myself... lol. Since my indicators are for aftermarket lights, I just wired the LED indicators to switched power side of the lights, so they come on only when the lights are powered. The lights themselves are similar to these ones, but I bought them on alibaba express since they had more options.

 

Don't use any handles that will move and clunk every time you corner or hit a bump.

 

Sweet! I used rope to make my bed drawer pull. Its a silent handle and free as long as you've got rope lying around!
