Yup. Driving back now. It's kind of long and filled with heroics.

Story time!

Once upon a time I traveled to the land of Deerfield, Virginia. There I stopped at the home of @3pooches for some good old fashioned muddin'. @ilubtimmyhos had also traveled there to partake in the fun.

We did some fun mud throwing in the field and got our trucks nice and dirty. It was a fun time slinging the rear end of the trucks around and doing some hill climbing.

Then we decided to run through the woods. No big deal. Some nicely cleared trails up in there. Nothing tough.

Except the dreaded hill of shame! Many have tried to conquer, but many have lost. One such person attempted the hill and struggled. My truck had made it up and I offered some help. I backed a little down the hill and heard some clunking noise from the rear of the truck. Uh oh.

At one point I stopped and yanked on my emergency brake handle and really heard a clunk. Bigger uh oh. I knew the cable has snapped.

We all eventually made it up the hill and headed back to the house. I could hear some rattling as I drove down the trail. Probably would need to investigate.

Pulled the wheel off the truck and was met with more than I bargained for. The caliper was dragging on the ground by the brake line. The brake line had pulled out of one end. And the caliper had ripped out of the mounting ears. Not exaggerating.

Yikes. @3pooches awesome wife drove a long way for the brake line. One fix down.

For the caliper two heros swooped in to save the day. Between the two they cut off the mangled portion of the caliper mount and fabbed and welded a fix.

Around midnight it was mostly done. We bled the brakes this morning and did a quick function check. Amazingly it all looked good.

@ilubtimmyhos followed me back for a bit and the brakes felt great. My truck made the three hour trip home. No problem

So thanks guys for saving my ass. And your skills. It's the reason why I like this group of guys here. Now a few pics.

We finally found the answer that tacoma owners have been seeking for centuries. Why does Toyota use drum brakes on the tacoma? This is why.

No idea. Adam thought that maybe one of the caliper mount bolts had backed out and hitting the brakes while in reverse torqued the caliper out of the mount. I'd agree, but it doesn't explain the brake cable.

Randy, that very thought crossed my mind. Fortunately I saved all the drum stuff.

 

I think you caught the brake cable when the caliper did I full rotation while gripping the rotor after it broke free

In the picture of your caliper is appears the caliper bolts are sheared off. Is that what happened or just backed out?

 

Damn that’s a lot of damage for an ebrake pull. I’l feel like if some damage happens those are the guys I’d want around though haha
