Agreed. I bashed my stock skid first time out with my new truck- odd since I've put A LOT of miles on other tacos off road and never hit. Went with the TRD one before I really knew about the other options.

I decided to not care if I hit it, and I can now say with confidence, the thickness makes for sliding, not crumpling.

Your steel will be even better.

Man I hope so, it’s definitely a lot heavier than the stock. Maybe the wife will let me get a tig welder soon and I can start building some aluminum versions! haha

That would be dope, but steel is stronger and slides better, but it rusts. 6 and a half dozen of the other tho i guess.

Cool to see someone making their own!

Picked up a port-a-band and some actual metal bits to continue with the skids today. Got right to work fabricating the spacers that will allow me to bolt the skid plate to the crossmember under the engine. Using the factory hardware and some .120 wall 1 1/2” pipe to make the spacers. I used a hole saw to cut out the caps for each spacer and then drilled a 5/8 hole in the center of each. I attached the spacers to the factory locations on the crossmember and then put the skid plate back up to mark out the location of the holes I needed to drill in the skid plate. Once they were marked out I was able to pull the plate down and use the same hole saw to cut out the marked areas. Essentially making a deep well for the bolt to go up into and connect to the frame.

After I got everything mocked up and fit back to the truck it was time to weld and grind. I welded in all my whiskey bends and ground everything nice and smooth with a flap disc. It came out pretty good. I can connect the skid to the truck in 6 places which makes it super sturdy. I bolted it back to the truck after welding to make sure nothing lost form. Everything fit like a glove. Primer and pain tomorrow followed by mock up of trans skid. 36394FF8-D9AD-47CE-8FDF-B8359ED637AB.jpg2B12B005-53A9-44BC-AFB9-AC01F926DE05.jpg

Finished up all the welding and grinding this morning. Added a drain hole under the oil pan that will work great when I install a fumoto valve and short piece of hose. Also added a “trap door” in the front to access the oil filter. Gonna start painting it this evening. Prime and then brush on flat black rustoleum. Not gonna powder coat it because I have a feeling it’s gonna get beats up fairly often. Finished up the mid skid today and bolted it up. Finished it off with some round head Allen key bolts for a bit lower profile and to match the black paint on the skids. Welded some angle iron to the frame crossmembers as a mounting point for the mid skid. Keeps everything up nice and high.

Also changed the LH axle seal. So in total, every seal in the front end has quit on me since I had the re-gear done. That’s pretty neat. 09986EB5-A94A-4667-B06F-D6231CDF790C.jpg89D8E47D-15CD-4FC4-B268-CEC2495A1916.jpg949FD879-2663-4078-A5FA-CA6D61735771.jpg6E17A286-6B9E-42F2-9D43-61DB4A4176E8.jpg

Haven’t done much to the Tacoma in the last few months due to back to back knee surgeries but I was able to get out and cruise some backroads today. Went out to Balanced rock just west of Monument, CO. Even got into some late may snow. Also today is the one year anniversary of the helo crash that busted up my knees and back. Lines up with Memorial Day weekend pretty well. It’s strange to look back on everything and remember lost friends. I hope everyone has a great Memorial Day. Stay safe out there.

Here’s a few pics from the archive:

This is my teammate and friend Steve and myself in 2017, Logar province, AFG. Unfortunately he was KIA about a week after this photo was taken. B1A205BB-3DA2-4316-A23F-DE07BB342AB3.jpg

here’s a couple from our fallen angel one year ago today. We’re all very lucky to have walked away from it.402D6C22-5C8C-4731-90BF-7EC49B34E2EB.jpg 8E7B8335-1A90-40ED-9C14-172E06C80401.jpg 37159B7E-040C-4230-808B-2843134BAEC2.jpg

Thank you both for your service and thank you for sharing your stories and preserving Steve's memory. Here's to healthy knees and time spend outdoors with the pups, wife, and Taco. I love this thread and the updates you've done to your truck. Cheers brother.

So I haven’t done much with the taco but I have managed to make some headway in the garage area. I decided that I was gonna finalize a floor plan that accommodates all our gear, tools and home gym equipment while still allowing us parking space during Colorado’s all too often hail storms. I started with moving the shelving to the open area above the garage door. It’s the perfect spot for stuff that we don’t use as often. 88E446C7-C4D4-4AAF-AD3E-03AA03ED8E4B.jpg

Next was consolidating like items with like items and then getting stuff on the walls and off the floor as much as possible to open up floor space. Recruited a buddy and bought some pizza and beer and this is what we came up.
    65FA7DFD-E552-4B8A-898D-450115307FD9.jpg 15C7976D-7BEB-4136-B0E5-C6306F1FB22C.jpgF5FFD73E-B910-400F-9D96-0F4BD078F542.jpg

Finally a solution that cleaned up the garage nicely and let me fit both vehicles in the garage. It’s real tight but I can even close the door.

Also re-worked the pressure washer setup and fixed the janky water spigot that was loosely connected to the wall. 332B8F16-5CA4-4520-81F6-51F147F8C6BF.jpg
The only thing left to do is tidy up the corner to the left of the toolbox. I’d like to add a tig welder and tubing bender to the mix so I may have to fab up a custom cart or stand. More to follow on that.A54D6BAB-7C3C-421F-9C85-DFA68E2AFB82.jpg

Well if you were to ask my wife I’m sure she would say furniture for the house but me, I’m all about the essentials. Haha
