Fuel pump recall on the way

It should be coming sooner than you think. My dads Lexus has the same recall he took it in today and they replaced the fuel pump. I'm sure us truck peasants don't get it for another month or so. But the fix is in for Lexus.

We go to to Frazier park and do some 4x4ing riding shooting etc.. If I ever get stuck in those mountains how on earth are they going to get their truck off the mountain. Plus no cell service either so the truck would be seriously stranded.

 

Mine can be added to the list....2019 TRD sport 2wd. Drove it this morning and all driving prior with no issue. Went to the grocery store This afternoon and leaving it started stuttering at the exit. Got on the road and gave it the gas it started coughing and had no power. The check engine and Trac off light came on. Had a feeling immediately what it was since getting the recall notice I limped it back into the next driveway to shut it down and restart it. Was able to mostly normal get it home (1.5 miles). Called up dealer and they immediately knew after I described it. Basically said call Toyotacare to tow it and you’ll get it back when you get it back. They have no idea how long it will be but plan on months.

 

My Taco insurance is up for renewal in June but I am just going to buy a storage policy and then drive my reliable 28 year old MR2 for the summer and early fall.

 

2018 sr with just under 40k. I have had one incident (could not be related) but I think it was. I was making a turn to cross 2 lanes of traffic so I pressed the gas pedal I would say a 1/4 pedal and had zero throttle response... so i romped on it considering i had to lanes of traffic traveling at 40 mph to my right. Slowly and super sluggish with hesitation she snapped back into it. The truck was warmed up as I had been driving for 45 minutes prior to this incident.

 

Update.....

Dealer ran the OBD code and gave it a look over. The fuel pump is done, the impeller was occasionally binding in the housing. If you look up the recall on a google search and look at the NHTSA write up on it, it failed in the exact manner the recall mentions. Apparently the impeller gets deformed with exposure to fuel..... They said they'll give me a loaner until its available but they have no trucks. I told them that "its not an option, I bought a truck and I'm paying for a truck for its purpose, not a Corolla." They said they "would look up what renting a truck would be for an extended period of time and reimburse me" until they saw what that would cost for a few months (over $2K for an F150).

An hour later they magically found that they had a fuel pump in stock, it's the same part that is recalled and likely would eventually fail like the old one in about a year or so but it will get me to when the redesigned one is available. I said fine and they installed the new pump and it runs normally.

Guess its up to you if you have trouble. If your OK with your truck parked in the back of the lot and driving (fill in the blank) loaner go with that, but stick to them as you have options.

 

My 2018 TRD Off Road has been increasingly exhibiting "hesitational tendencies". They happen when I gradually accelerate after slowing down for a sharp turn at low speed and also from a stop. Haven't noticed anything when accelerating at higher speeds. Now it's at a point that it's annoying but tolerable. My local dealer, Glens Falls Toyota, provides free loaner vehicles if you purchased or leased from them and the work being done requires the vehicle to be there for something beyond scheduled maintenance. BTW....they loaned me a new 4Runner Limited when I had the front sensor recall work done on my Tacoma last year. Sweet ride!

 

Back in January the toyota.com/recall website (based on my VIN) said I fell under the safety recall. Then a month later I got the letter. I even kept checking the toyota.com/recall website every few weeks because I kept checking the "faq pdf" out of curiosity since the # of affected vehicles kept growing (and I was waiting for ETA on fix).

So this morning I check on the website, and now it says "There are no open Safety Recalls or Service Campaigns for this vehicle." I'd be curious if this has happened to anyone else.

 

I was at the dealer for service Sunday. They told me the recall exists, but that they haven't started doing them yet.

 

Yes, then I refreshed the page and it showed up.

 

I seem to recall that fuel pump failure is more prevalent in warmer climates. Where do you live?

My fuel pump took a dump a few days ago. Good news is the dealership is covering the cost of the replacement fuel pump and rental. Bad news is Toyota has not come up with a solution to the faulty part so it's bound to happen again.

 

I have 4 Tacomas either late 18 or early 19 that are all impacted by the recall.
All 4 trucks work out in the middle of the SENM and WTX desert area.
One truck died on my technician on Friday. Truck was towed (at my expense) to local dealership who confirmed it was a recall related failure.
Told me the truck was ready to pickup and they would advise me in September when the replacement part was available and "it's not recommended to drive it"

I'll be on the phone with Toyota first thing Monday AM. This can be a serious life/death issue for my employees.
Being in the middle of 110 degree weather, no cell service and a dead truck is scary.

Certainly frustrating times, I hope Toyota has a helpful option.
I see Delphi has a replacement fuel pump on the market for them, I wonder if it is an improved design.

 

Would the fuel pump recall be expected to show up on Toyota Owners.com? My 2019 shows no recalls.

 

Toyota.com/recall, type in your VIN. All 4 of mine/our trucks are recalled for that and a reprogram of that goofy radar setup.

 

Well I am now victim of the 2019 fuel pump recall. Truck just died driving down the road. They also have no fix and told me it could be 6 months before I get my truck back. All this and I have my bumper and winch on order Sad days ☹️

 

Any update on this? Thats really a shame. Cant they just install a new fuel pump temporarily? SO MANY QUESTIONS!

 

Man where to start..... that has been a pain in my. So the Tacoma’s are not being fixed until late September according to Toyota. I had made numerous calls to Toyota of America and finally found some one that would authorize for it to be replaced but even that part is on back order. My truck will still be part of the recall when the true fix is released. So at this point I am still driving around the rental. The dealership has been really good with everything and is frustrated as we are. They do need Toyota of America to authorize the repair of the dealership has to eat all the cost even for the rental car.

 

Man. That stinks. At least they are treating you well. All the dealers and service departments near me are terrible. This whole thing is making me nervous. I hope it works out for you soon bud.

 

My 2019 is at 10k miles and reading this stuff makes me nervous too. I just keep telling myself for every 1 story i hear of a bad pump another 5,000 are fine. Fingers crossed until september when they start replacing pumps
