Can we shut off the TMPS light?

I'd like to mount snow tires on their own rims, but not buy new TPMS sensors for the new wheels because of the cost (~$600 for the sensors according to the dealer). Therefore, I'd like to shut off the TPMS for the winter. The service rep said that there is information on the internet about how to shut off the TPMS light.

Anyone know how?

 

Electrical tape......or take the dash apart and remove the bulb.

 

Dont know about your year 2008 i know it can be done on the 2006 but i say since its just for the winter leave the light with the black tape mod on so that its not fully disabled.

 

there is a guy on ebay,with a set of 4 -5 lug wheels from an 09 with the tpms sensors in em, he has been asking like 300 bucks, but if they dont sell you mite offer him like 200 for the sensors let him toss the wheels and you have 2 spare snsors

I put steel rims on my Tacoma. Fully expected to see the TPMS light. It never came on!!! Go figger!! I have been driving them now for 6000 kms.

 

Oh? How do you disable it? I have a bad sensor and plan on getting an aftermarket kit that'll monitor and display exact pressure and temperature per tire at some point. How kit will cost less than 1 sensor from Toyota. And it gives more information. Go figure.

 

do you still have your stock wheels? are they in the garage where you park your truck or nearby? the truck will pick up those sensors even if they are not mounted on it. it takes mine a couple days to realize i've changed the wheels on it and if i park out by the barn where they are overnight, it will take a few days to come back on.

 

How do you do it for a 2006? I freaking hate that light...

 

There is a guy on toyota nation that did an 06 taco , he has pics and every thing looks pretty involved he had to loosen console, take out stereo and lower part of dash, to unplug the tpms ecu

After reading it - I think I'll let it burn out.

 

Read further down theres another guy simplified it a bit, only loosened lower part of dash he said 2 screws, then the kick panel on pass side to ground the led

 

Thanks everyone. If the light comes on with new wheels, I think I'll use the black-electrical-tape-over-the-TPMS-light method for the winter.

 

There is a much easier one on TN where the harness is behind the glove box. I printed it out and bought the stuff at wal mart, (a inline fuse & couple of electrical connectors ~ $5). Never did the mod on my 06 because I decided to keep the stock rims. Now the pics are gone off the post because the guy got rid of his truck. It only works with 06's for some reason. I gotta find that printout/link.

 

Okay, very old thread but still relevant to my issue. I have heard of people buying more sensors and putting them inside a tube or pipe with a schrader valve on it so you can pressurize it, thus tricking the ECU into beleiving the summer tires are still on.

However, there are two problems,
1. Its expensive and;
2. I'll have to get the new sensors uploaded to the ECU and vice versa in the spring.

Thoughts?

 

This is one of the reasons why I love my 05! No TPMS and no seat belt beep! HAHA

 

If you do the PVC or tractor tire trick- You can use the TPMS sensors you have already. Just take them out of the current tires and put in new valve stems and then you never have to worry about them.
