Midsize, mass production trucks with mass produced bolt on parts aren’t exactly hard to come by or difficult to “build.”

Looks like there are stock comparables with similar mileage for 30-33k in that area. Some of his mods are likely desirable, so he can likely gt a bit more than that, but not 12k+ more. lol

He can probably sell it for ~36k. List it for 40k and leave some haggle room.
45k is definitely way too much though.

I think there is a general misconception on modifications increasing the value of a vehicle and partially due to value mapping and buyer perspective. For many people on TW this truck, even modified, is about all anyone can reasonably afford under whatever conditions, circumstances, and/or financial decisions so spending $45k+ seems unreasonable.

What I am poking at is that modifications to vehicles do increase sale price of a given vehicle, I'm not sure value is a word we can use simply because that is somewhat subjective and not something we can easily quantify.

If we compare modified vehicles across the market, modified offroad vehicles will see an increase in price/value based on those modifications. Look at the LC80 market or even the Jeep market, as an example my Jeep in stock form is worth more today than what I paid for it years ago, and is worth exponentially more with it modified. Samurais can be bought for around $3k but a modified one will jump to $10k-$15k.

It also depends if the mods were "smart," a bunch of random rocker switches on a dash is going to drive less value than a purpose built switch system. A rebuilt set of Kings are going to drive more value and price than a set of OME Nitrochargers.

With inflation, it's quite easy to recoup your costs in modifications.

I was one that stated "rare" in this thread in my area. The population of the city I am in + the neighboring city is around 230K so its pretty small than cities most people here are in.
He took it out of context and tried to be sarcastic. I was telling him MODDED Tacomas are rare in my area. There are plenty of stock ones here. Modded Jeeps and rock bouncers/modded UTVs reign supreme in my area for offroading. Pretty small city so you pretty much see the same modded vehicle and know who it is once you met them.
So when they see a modded Tacoma, they ask what's in it, how much, why did I pick that vehicle as the platform, why not jeep etc. Curiosity or friendly gesture who knows? It's also a city where clubs/groups even leave cards on your windshield if you have it modded telling you to join their group or some event going on.

There’s definitely some buyers for a truck like this. Some ppl pay would pay for convenience of having a turn key truck - perhaps someone who is hesitant to do mods themselves because they don’t know much about how to do so. Personally, I’d rather buy a stock truck and do things myself. Some small
    Mods are ok.

100k here, next “large” city at 50k is two hours away. Next 100k city is 4 hours and another couple 50k cities anywhere from 5-hours away. Yet, modded Tacoma’s are not rare here. Kind of surprised they are there considering how common it is to do lifts and armor. Those are some of the most basic mods for a 4x4 in most rural areas.

That said, we also don’t have the population base to ask 50k for a modded Tacoma and get it. Now considering this is in CA will millions of people, to include many more wealthy- he will def get what he is asking. Money is only relative to what you personally make.

In Spanish we have this saying: No esta caro, ganas poco. Which basically translate to: Its not expensive, you just make too little.

I think it is because of the type of offroading they do here. It's mostly mud pits and rock crawling (my Taco can't fit in some of the location cause of trees).
I go at least 2-4 hrs away to do majority of my offroading. People that have Tacomas here and want to offroad just keep it stock and have dedicated jeeps, UTVs/ATVs (lots of shops that works on them), etc for offroading. To them, having a Tacoma really modded out seems foreign. It's not just the Taco, a couple of people I met in my area have modded FJ and 4runner that gets the same treatment. It's probably due to the big jeep/ATV following here. I think they are just curious and have nothing better to do. You know how it is with a small city and their random idle chitchats.
Now, I have relatives in Austin, Tx, and would sometimes take the long haul and drive there. The taco doesn't get the same love as it does where I am residing. Now thinking about it, no one has ever come up to me in Austin. I have seen lots of modded tacos there though.

So are we really going to skip over the fact that the Op is critical about a guy who wants to set asking price that is high in his mind.

But Op wants to spend an extra 10k for a 4runner pro compared to an Offroad. (16k over an sr5).

I’m just a Canadian, and our prices are definitely different than Americans pricing. However that 4runner pro is gonna drop harder in resale than an offroad or sr5.

Ops math is running in full Friday thread mode.

Those people rarely buy second hand of anything. They will surely not buy a 4 year old truck @60k miles. The guy is hoping for someone that has too much money to spend would just but a TRD Pro and pay a garage to do all the research and modifications.

I suppose that makes sense. Although I’m more used to seeing guys who off road, mod about anything. Rock crawlers is a whole other subclass that typically are into it enough to spend the extra coin on a dedicated LT vehicle or have tons of cash. Here and a lot of other places I’ve lived, people mod their daily for off-road needs.

I’m retrospect, that could be more so because it’s all been guys I’ve served with. So a dedicated vehicle isn’t always practical for the next move. In fact any additional recreational vehicles have really only boats, motorcycles, or campers.

The modded FJ and 4runner I was talking about was guys that are Active Duty. Everyone else gets all the cool dedicated stuff or get some more HORSEPOWER under that Cummins lol.
Seriously though, lots of lifted and obnoxious full-size trucks running around.

Not outrageous even a little. Knew someone here with a third-gen similarly built and sold it for $45k, maybe even a little more. As it's been mentioned, there's a buyer for everything.

I think he'd be stupid to not list it at that price because he can always negotiate down a little if needed. Doesn't exactly work the other way.

Its over priced and he is fishing for a sucker or the mentally challenged.

Rich folks will just buy something newer, much higher end, and have someone else customize it right off the lot.

He probably owns a boat and tried this move when he became tired of it too.....

The fair market price of anything is exactly what people are willing to pay for it. That's how it works.

If he can sell it for that price he did not overestimate the value.
