I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I just completed 4wd conversion and when I started the truck I hear a squealing coming from transmission bell housing. It makes the same noise even when shifting into any other gear. I didnt fill the torque converter with fluid when I installed the transmission. Could it be the transmission fluid hasn't circulated throughout the entire transmission and torque converter yet. I have only started it 3 or 4 times and ket it run for maybe a minute at a time. The transmission only had 95,000 miles on it. I filled the transmission with Toyota WS fluid about 5 1/2 quarts. I'm worried I did something wrong and have to pull the transmission again. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend!

100% remove it and inspect whats grinding.

Is it possible the torque converter isnt seated?

You do not have to fill torque converters when replacing them. Most have residual fluid in them anyway.

Ok, even though everything bolted right up it's still possible I didnt get it seated properly. I knew enough to do this conversion, but I'm definitely not a professional mechanic. I appreciate the advice. Thank you

I'm not insulting you, but do you understand how a torque converter seats? It has to sit into the pump and drive, if its not fully seated, it rams the input shaft into the transmission when the bell housing is bolted together.

I've done this once in my career and was 100% obvious when I tried to start it, it didnt do any damge (chev 350) but it scared the shit out of me.

Trust me know offense taken. I made sure it was pushed all the way into the transmission. You think that maybe when I slide it forward that it didnt seat up the right way. I will pull it tomorrow and check. I hope this doesnt sound stupid, but when I installed the bolts for flywheel into the torque converter I was able to freely spin torque converter to line bolt holes up.

It can spin freely fully seated or one notch out.

It might not be the issue, but such an odd sound you need to pull it and inspect.

    What hasn't been modified?
It sounds like the same thing we did with my conversion.
Did you ever remove the torque converter from the tranny?
Most likely you dident long up the torque converter and pump, aparently there is a key on there and if it’s not correct it destroyed the tranny pump.

I had a tranny shop look at it and they were able to swap the pump from the 750e to the 750F and get me on the road again

Did you check the fluid level after getting it up to temp?

I haven't checked the fluid yet in temp mode. I was afraid of screwimg something up so I would cut the truck off after a minute or so. I dont think i every pulled the torque converter all the way off. Not sure if the place I got it from did either.

What did that cost you to have that replaced? Is it possible I have clogged filter?

They did not charge me anything as it was quick and easy for them to swap pumps. I brought them both trannies and torque converters.

you think that may be my problem? I did this conversion without my wife having a clue what I was doing outside in the rain crawling around on my back for a couple days. I guess this is what I get for not keeping her in the loop! Now I'm afraid I have to take it somewhere and have them fix it.

I’m not 100% but I think the torque converter was not seated properly and put extra strain on the crank shaft and wore out the bearings. There for burning up the trans and destroying the engine.

that sucks, starting to make me second guess myself. I immediately start to fear the worse when things like this happens. I'm about to check the basics now, the fluid level. Once I heard the squeal I was afraid to ket it run to long. Especially if I have to wait for transmission to come up to correct temperature. You think it will be ok to run it long enough to check.

Idk man. I personally wouldn’t. I wouldn’t want to take the chance of scoring the pump or torque converter Or messing up the bearings . I don’t think the pump running dry would produce such a loud noise. I’m not a trans specialist so take my words with a grain of salt!

if I knew100% that it was bolted together perfect and seated properly I’d say go on with the temp check and fill process.

I just rebuild my valve body of my 5.7 tundra last month and there is a lot of room for error in transmission work!

I like to install the torque converter and spin it a few times. They can be fickle and it will click audibly into place. I do this a few times as I have messed one up when I first worked on transmissions 15 years ago. More than likely that may be the culprit. Fingers crossed!
