Hydration is an interesting topic. I’ve always struggled with it even playing soccer in high school. I read a good article a couple weeks ago but I need to find it. You can basically weigh yourself before and after to get a starting point for how much you should be drinking and how many electrolytes should be in your drink.
Only it’s the three wheeled version Bernard Kerr whips around haha

I found the blog I had read. According to the study it looks like runners with hyponatremia more likely weighed more post race. Which i read as they had a lower sodium concentration in their blood and while still gaining weight weight. It sounds kind of like they are drinking something with a low sodium concentration so the body can’t absorb the water/electrolytes but the study said composition had no statistical significance. It’s really interesting but adds to my confusion with hydration haha

Reading that skratch article and the link I posted, I think the reconciling factor between the two is that while hydrating is fine, most of us are overhydrating on underreplentishing fluids.

Something like G2 gatorade is cool and all, but a full dose of Skratchlabs at recommended dosage is like drinking seawater. I think what we prefer to drink is so watered down that there isn't a significant difference, and thats what the study finds.

Yeah you’re definitely right. I think there is one discrepancy though in the post race weight gain. The skratch article says you are likely fine but the study says you might not be.

on the note of mixes though, skratch is one of my favorites tbh and I could drink it all day.

I use the Skratch stuff on big race days(6+ hours) but alternate with bottles of water. It may not be skratch actually but similar, I use whatever my wife uses for her Ironman races, can't remember what it is.

Either I’m not core enough, or you guys have too much time on your hands.

I drink water. Straight up, from the tap.

You can take advantage of @Bannerman 's skratch lab bottles after he dies of "acute brake failure"

I'll put in another vote for the Dakine Hotlaps. I have the 5L and love it and have no issues with the hose reaching my mouth at 6'. I've used it for some real big days without issue (26miles/3000ft plus), but I'll admit it's a bit uncomfortable with >1L of water.

Someone with a more scientific background or more time to look it up can better explain it, but basically your body uses electricity to send signals to muscles to fire and when you are low enough on electrolytes even though your brain sends the signals, they can't get to the muscle.

Dr. Kreiger wasn't joking when he said "the human body is basically a potato clock"

I'd say your description is good enough for this group.

That basically the gist of it, but its more than just signals to the muscles. The muscles require ions to contract once the signal reaches them, specifically Calcium. plus water, minerals, vitamins, etc need to be within a pretty tight range in your cells (different cell types require different concentrations of different things), and if either the water or solute concentrations go out of the ranges, as can happen really easily while exercising there will be a host of problems.

lol I prefer the term "enthusiast" but yea, I'm basically a nerd. especially when it comes to exercise science, physiology, and biomechanics stuff. I work as a PTA in orthopedics. :D
