I trust that the truss welds in the axle tube is good, I’m decent at welding mild steel... decent enough anyways. But the truss to the cast may see a fair bit of stress since I’ll be running a 38” tire on this axle. I don’t wheel the Jeep easy at times and I’m this far into it, I want it to be right.

I'm with Maner. I like the deeper supports. It does need the base bracing like drawn in the above picture. Make 2 sets, this way you will have a shelf for the the tools that are not used that often.

Needed a piece of pipe for the end of the gate. (I swear I measured correct!) That little 2 1/2" x 60" is $12! That's a 12 pack of beer!

I scrounged thru my scrap pile and found an old bent axle. It was a repair job last winter. It was the exact diameter that I needed. I grafted it onto the scraps I cutoff the gate rails. Who gives a shit about a few weld seams? Welding thru the paint on that axle was a chore.6GVxGzLYaqmPjuEFfmvzbZgI5ndzcb5QKo5_ap3p_868d423fa80fc8b146f79952422dd48b918bc5fd.jpg nUXC_xMefrVSxo1Lmgay5m7vXHOwS8vDaVpQIdmL_74f41bdb29c1d51d10d7c6ad77038f0532ee5139.jpg [IMG]

I tack welded some scrap angle to the fab table. This gives me a pretty good guide for welding the tube scraps together.FNH_VTzcbA4jpw9HJqHLWwcvsgcwOIqH0hs8glvC_a00a9874bec16683e498c7b4b67299c54daba356.jpg NTZNtR02u6KNma8VzFPArhe_ucDX6hsSJ754DAjj_89e56565a2f785b1164373446c8b22638445c429.jpg nUXC_xMefrVSxo1Lmgay5m7vXHOwS8vDaVpQIdmL_74f41bdb29c1d51d10d7c6ad77038f0532ee5139.jpg

You can see the bend in the axle when comparing it to the straight angle iron.GK-tgAWorQ3Hv5U_dkcjTqBUB0EANE0-tQNCywVb_ce5538f64d3fd38a118af3f6de42983f9a22e897.jpg xYFQj8-LO13GFz2NOdZSfYDYeuHEqAzHRlUN14Vx_6a8263371580414894562ea149fa44ac0f5d4030.jpg

I did something similar when building my rear bumper. I didn't have long enough pieces of round tube for the side supports, so I just stuck a couple together and worked fine.

Very cool. Maybe some day I'll have another one, but frankly, I'm trying to retire for good, and have fun. Lol. It must have been a shadow in your truck. It looked like three eights...lmao.

What paint are you using? The finish is hella consistent.

Time to finish up this side. It's just heavily tack welded for now.IMG_20200526_125107.jpg

these swing out gates work horrible in the winter. Trying to open them with 18" of snow just sucks. The new roller gate should work better._fHG3GsKl0z130K9DZqwLIeCjsnzCzKPK1U7xqUp_b8c225b8967f44061431263038503681d0bf3f19.jpg

This pig is done... this is by far the most I have welded onto an axle before and I’m glad to say... I’m finished. Time to clean it a bit then paint.

Most of the welds are decent but overall I feel the axle is much stronger than before and the welds will hold fine... fine enough for a newbie welder.

What ended up being your determination on the cast welds?

I had another friend look at them who has a lot more experience than I do. He did say they aren’t the best but they’re good enough for this. He pointed out some overlap, undercut and a little porosity on some welds but nothing that will be fatal to the overall scheme.
