Yesterday me and a couple buddies were going up to Santiago peak. The way we went was very steep for a good bit of time. I was just having a good ole time till I looked at my ultragauge and saw my trans was at 265 and engine 210. I put it into 1st year (was in 2nd, opps) and that made the engine happy but the trans was staying at like 230.

My plan is to get a larger trans cooler, ditch it looping into the csf rad and hope that makes it stay a little cooler.

Explain the tap water thing to me?

I have intently been contemplating the switch over to water/ water wetter anyways but seeing the temps what they were yesterday puts me in a position to rethink it and just do it much quicker than the pace I am moving at.

A cool engine is a happy engine after all. :)

On that very mention of a CSF radiator. What is the consensus with them. Go with the FJ single core version or the tacoma bolt in 2 core version. I know the tacoma one is more money, but after you buy the needed shrouds it is kinda 6's. I have the FJ one and just haven't put it in yet. Trying to decide if I should sell it and get the tacoma one or just order the shrouds and that route.

Distilled only. Tap water still has particulates and other fun stuff in it that’ll cause algae growth or whatever.

dont use faucet water. that would be bad with clorine and minerals. just go to the drugstore and spend a whole 2$ on a couple gallons of distilled.

Hey a little green never hurt. :rasta:

Seriously though in my 16+ years of wrenching I've never had a build up of the green inside of a cooling system from just running water on a vehicle. (And I don't know how many thousands of cars I've dealt with at this point) Let alone running water with water wetter.

If it’s alive and moving then I’m out

I mean I guess if you changed it out frequently maybe it can’t hurt. My friends taught me how to work on cars and I’m pretty sure they use tap water too. Just something I learned back in my days of computer water cooling. Then realized the same thing transferred over to cars.

I have the fj version with zero complaints. I had no choice as I was in the group that first got them and the fj was all we had. If I had the choice now without having one, I’d just get the Tacoma version. If I were you, unless you can dump that one for sure, I’d just put it in

i would suggest anx aux fan in front of the cooler to be triggered once the temp gets to a set degree. i thnk there is a thermostat on the trans. so check to see what temp it will open.

@12TRDTacoma even with water wetter and distilled water, i pretty sure you still need to change it every year. royal purple and engine ice are other options. royal purple is like water wetter, but they say there is an advantage to their product. engine ice is full coolant designed to be racetrack friendly. engine ice works good in all the bikes my friends and i have in bakersfield with 100+ days in the summer while betting the piss out of them on the track. 10k plus rpms all day long no over heating issues.
