You gotta know how you will spend it before you get there. And you can still invest the rest. You have time to plan, it’s not like the money is instantly there like winning the lottery.

On a related note, if you don’t know exactly what you will do with 100 million, you shouldn’t play the lottery....
On a related note, you probably shouldn’t play the lottery, but I understand it can be thrilling to dream.

A couple uncles and my father passed away with more money than they have ever had at any point in there life. This is with years of retirement in the books.

Has me tempted to buy more as it was nearly double my investment when it peaked today. My shares were 3.40 I think. I just know nothing about the standing of the business. Was literally a stock that was bottomed out later than nearly anything, so I bought it. Guess I’ll research their chances of survival

Oh I agree 100%. I haven't really gotten too lost in the weeds on what my retirement will look like as I have many more years to get to retirement. However, I am trying to aggressively save now so that I (hopefully) don't have to work as hard in my 40s,50s, etc. I have aspirations to start a family and such... and I can't imagine that saving money gets any easier once that happens!

I can't say that's the wrong way to go either, but I am pretty confident that I have nothing coming my way in the way of an inheritance. I figure if I want to have something I might as well build it myself. That said I am sure that there are many people (and I venture to say that most diligent savers fall into this camp) come to realize that the things that are enjoyable to them aren't that lavish or expensive. I don't necessarily need a huge house, and aside from my desire to have one nice car in the fleet I don't think that I could blow through millions of dollars playing golf every morning with the boys, spending the rest of my day fishing and working on the yard, and taking a nice trip once or twice a year... :notsure:

Hard to predict but I want to die broke. Hopefully by then I will have had my fun and given the rest to my daughter. No need to give it all to an assisted living (living morgue). My family has been trying to convince my grandma (88) to start letting go of her money. She says she wants to save it for us but doesn’t realize if she needs full time care they will acquire all her assets for the past 36 months. She is still very healthy and shows no signs of slowing down. But still, the inevitable is getting closer. Not trying to be greedy just smart.

It’s strange how you change and and how a person perceives what retirement means to them. All I’ve ever heard from financial planers and investment people is .... What do you want to do in retirement. All I say now is . Make me the most money before I retire.

She can give anyone up $13,000 a year as a “gift”. This way it is actually going to her sons or whoever she wants to give that amount to. The assisted living/ nursing facilities can go back usually 3 years to obtain any assets or money transferred to friends or family.

They are a radio/advertising stock. I guess people feel more ads will be returning as more companies seek to attract post covid consumers? They are not attractive to me...Just like ETM. You could have 2x your money if you had the balls to buy in when they were $0.77 on 4/7 with dire outlook and horrible ratings...Somehow they have rebounded to $1.78...with no real improvement in their debt or business model. If you believe over the air radio is dead...avoid them. One of the few "didn't pop yet post covid" radio stocks is SALM. It's a throw $100 and hope for $200 in a month...but you have to watch it carefully...It's radio. 1 year target is $2.50. It's market cap is 21.37M and an EPS of $-1.05. Compare that with Entercom (one of the "big boys") that's cap is 240M and a 1 year of $1.70 with an EPS of $-3.18

IF I were looking at a media stock it's SALM right now purely for a short term pop and flip...

    But again, it's media.
I've made and lost money on
Destroyed by GCI post split/acquisition...Lost like 80% of it's value in a year....buying up companies and dying.
Not to be confused with Emmerson Radio Corp (MSN) which I made good money with when it went from $0.50 to $2.50 when nothing was popping...

    o_O Wut.

I’ve never heard of such a thing, but I know they can ‘evict’ someone if funding ceases. They don’t have rights to someone else’s money — it’s a fancy landlord situation: you no pay, you leave (and probably end up in court for missed payments)

Yup..my great aunt only had my mom as family and had a house in Sommerville MA they bought in like 1902...She transferred ownership to my mom through some co-ownership financial manager thing...Just get a financial consultant. They sold it after she died and the guy gutted it and flipped it for like $1.25M. He almost 2x his money...But it needed SOOOO much work. It still had 1.5" waste water pipes and a claw foot tub they added to the the bathroom in the 1930's. Don't let your old parents sit around on 7 figures. They'll just lose it all to f#$# leeches. They would have taken her house, all her stock...etc if she needed 5 minutes in a home...They bleed you dry and then "well maybe it's time for her to go peacefully...." now that you have no money left...

it has nothing to do with landlords. It’s how nursing and full time assisted living facilities make there money. You sign everything you own over to them, house, cars, property, stocks, bank account, you name it and you are in there hands for life. The facilities can check back up to 36 months prior to “checking in” and obtain assets.

This helps shed a little light on the matter

I believe you are confused, but in any case, I wish you the best of luck getting everything sorted with her finances and care. There are enough problems to worry about with age and health before adding other complications

Wow all this talk of assisted care I had no idea how it all worked. That's kind of spooky. Hope I never reach that point.

I'm 27. I want to retire 50-55. Dink might help that actually happen. I haven't actually laid out a plan or anything yet I should probably get on that.

We'll see what actually happens. I'd LIKE to be able to basically fully live on dividends which is ballpark 500k, which could be doable. But we'll see.

Hey man, can't take it with you. Might as well enjoy it while you can.

Living on dividends with 500k invested? What's the play? One of these tactics below? A lot of standard companies are cutting or removing their dividend right now...
    https://www.forbes.com/sites/brettowens/2016/11/02/how-to-make-500000-last-forever/#165a218d30e1

A standard dividend stock won't generally yield you enough on 500k to make much of a living... But I guess that depends on how modestly you live.
