The first couple services are important. After that, you can do the vast majority yourself and take it in for services you're not comfortable doing. Once a year I'll take it in for a service so they can give it the once over in case I missed something.

Ya. That’s the only reason I decided to pony up the cash for it and go to the dealer. A non HD shop quoted me at 350 but I’d just rather have it done by someone who’s done this service hundreds of times and knows what to look for

 

Those non-HD shops are usually staffed by ex-Harley dealer techs who wanted to make better money.

It wasn't a HD specific mechanic though, but I'm sure they still know what they're doing. I just would prefer a dealer for the 1k service. It's my first Harley and I don't want to take any chances. It's only $100 more and peace of mind.
