    So here's the story:

I bought a used 2008 tacoma (Still in factory warranty <36k miles) from what I thought was a straighforward dealer (my bad, I know). During "the sell", the dealer mentioned it had a single owner, well taken care of, and an extended warranty.

I felt the price was reasonable, but based on the fact that it had the extended warranty (which was a $1000-$1500 value to me). They didnt have the warranty paperwork when I sat down to purchase the vehicle, but promised they would get it from the owner.

Just to be sure, I had them call toyota directly and verify that the car (by vin#) had an extended warranty on it - it did, and I was present for the entire phone call and heard everything. I took their word they would get the paperwork for me so I could transfer the warranty to my name, etc.

It's been a little over two months - I have phoned and written a letter asking for the paperwork. The last straw was they said they had it and mailed it, but I still have not received it (a week ago and they are 1 hour away driving).

I called toyota and they said the extended warranty couldnt be transferred because I bought it from a dealer... and they wont talk to me because I am not the person who originally bought the warranty - and I dont have their information.

It would seem that if the warranty is tied to the vin#, it should just roll to the new owner... am I getting BS from all sides here or what?

I'm just trying to get the warranty in my name - does anyone have any advice? Maybe someone who works for toyota financial that can help me?

Other than that - I am happy to report I put the first part of a toytec ultimate lift kit on over the weekend... :)

Thanks for any help or ideas...

I would go back to the dealer you bought it from and raise such a stink that people in the showroom would leave. I had to do this at the toyota dealer by me when they told me I was getting a check back from them for money they owed me back from a mistake they made. After a month I went in there like a wild man yelling at the general manager to the point that customers were leaving! Low and behold, they cut me a check right then. It's a shame that you have to do this sometimes but I'm not about to get f#*@ed with! Good luck and I hope everything works out

As far as I know, if you purchased extended warranty and trade your vehicle in or sell it within the warranty period you can then get part of the $$$ back from Toyota pro-rated. Perhaps the original owner didn't know or maybe filed the paperwork to get it back. It takes a while. Like 2 months.

    .

Could the dealer have turn the extended warranty in for a credit/refund ??

I know a Ford dealer who did that on a trade and kept the refund money ... but the customer knew they were doing it as it was part of the deal.

Very good possibility. The paperwork had to go through the dealership when I did mine.

I just did this. I consumed 25% of my Toyota warranty and got essentially $1,500off on the backend of the price.

If you're the vehicle owner, you're the warranty owner and you are entitled to answers - IN WRITING!

Remember, Toyota has 100K on the drive train without the Extra Care and that's good enough for me.

There is a .pdf on the Toyota Financial Website that outlines all the plans.
Basically it says for all of them ~
"Transferable one time, from the original new car owner to the next owner, for a $50 processing fee".

    http://www.toyotafinancial.com/cons.../tfs/en_US/document/vsa/Toyota_QRF_Reader.pdf

When I traded my tundra in to the dealer, I cashed in my extended warranty.
I would think the dealer owes you a extended warranty...is it certified? You can have them tack one on the 100k powertrain or cut you a check for what they sell the warranty for. Take the money. You have up until the original warranty 3/36 expires to buy it & there are a couple of places who offer it here much cheaper than what most dealers try to sell it for at time of purchase.

Search extended warranty, there are folks like Troy from Greenfield Toyota or Mike from Handy Toyota who sell the toyota plans at good prices if that is what you want.

If you have it in writing then threaten to sue them if they don't make it right. I wouldn't fuck around. I'd be at my attorney's office drafting a letter. Give them 24 hours to produce a PAID FOR extended warranty.

That kind of shit is why I hate car dealers with a passion. I've had one good experience, the rest were crappy. I don't trust them one bit.

I have in writing that they would "help" me get the warranty paperwork but not actually provide it.

When I spoke to toyota financial they said it couldnt be transferred - I'll give them a call tomorrow morning and see if I can get anywhere by reading them their own paper... thanks for that link!

The other problem is, the warranty isnt active yet because it is still under factory warranty. I was trying to get the warranty so I would have the option to cash it in if I wanted.

I am also going to go to the original dealer and see if they can help as well.

did you buy this from a Toyota dealer or some other car dealer? As other stated, the previous owner most likely cashed out the remaining warranty.

You can buy the extended warranty anytime before 3yrs/36K miles is up. There's a person here on TW that sells the extended warranty for much cheaper. I would tell the dealer to refund whatever "extended warranty" they sold you, and buy it from the member here.

it reads in the document posted by simon's mom that the warranty is transferable "between private parties only, excludes retail outlets."

the salesman may have mistakenly told you that you'd get the warranty and is now eating his words, though it sounds more like you might have to make him eat them.

I've been looking for this. Anyone remember the member's name? I just bought an 08 and I'm interested in extending my warranty before my 3/36 runs out.

It wasnt a toyota dealer - in fact, the way it was presented, they were selling this more as a consignment, rather than normal where they own the vehicle. That was the reason the price was not really negotiable.

It seems to me that this falls under private party to private party - but as soon as I mentioned "dealer" to toyota they stopped being friendly...
