What are they and how to remove?

Gave my truck a much needed wash and wax last week and it looked great besides whatever these are! I'm guessing some sort of rock chip guard?

Anyone have them and remove them successfully without ruining the paint under?
Goo gone?
3M magic eraser wheel?

 

I removed mine on my 08 with a heat gun...it was a nightmare! I don't know what kind of adhesive toyota used but just be ready for a fight. Cleaned up all the excess glue I couldn't get off with one of these,

 

That's what I was afraid of! Dang I have a heat gun and an eraser wheel but boy I don't like using either.

What's the official toyota name of that thing?

Paint protect film.

Usually they are fairly easy to peel off before they go that bad with heat, steam works best as it doesn't get too hot. You tug on the film in one direction like towards the ground for example. The film should peel in the opposite direction and you want to spray the steam right where it's going to peel next. Great thing about the steam method is it seems to leave most of the sticky glue on the back of the film so it's not there to have to clean up on the paint.

 

That's a really good idea! I think I have a hand held steamer stashed somewhere.

I'm not certain that's the same stuff. This is sorta paint matched almost like a vinyl with a thick adhesive backing. Same trick might work though!

 

Those are called protectors. Judging from their appearance, they're either way past their due date or they were damaged from heat/chemical/combination of elements. It will be very difficult to remove them since they have lost integrity.

 

I just used heat gun + googone with no issue. I did it a short while after I bought it so it may be a lot harder since yours has been on there for quite a while.

 

Well I checked out my steam gun and the tank is cracked. A buddy that does detailing said hes done a few with a heat gun and some special solvent he uses when detailing. Gonna exchange some HP tuners time on his car for him removing these. I'll post pics when done hopefully its at least black underneith still.

 

Your film was originally clear...

 

Well it flaked off glossy black as if it was paint pealing so hopefully that's not the paint coming with it

 

Technique used was plastic razor blades and a strong solvent that I don't know the name of. It's what my car wash manager buddy uses to clean the car wash machines. Came out great even though each side came off totally different likely due to how it sits in my barn.
