I was washing my truck last weekend and noticed a spot on the roof where the clear coat is completely worn through. The truck was purchased in July of 2017 and has been parked outside since, but I completely baby the heck out of this thing. It only has about 15k miles because it's my vacation vehicle.

I did read a few posts about defective paint but those were mostly limited to blue and white tacos. Anyone with a MGM or any other color having this problem?

EDIT: My roof is otherwise in pristine condition and those lines that appear to be scratches in the pictures are actually dog hairs.

Really? My other car is 10 years old and has seen its fair share of bird shit. No issues like this.

When i see bird shit on my paint, i get a slight heart attack. Thats after i ceramic coated my paint, ha! Bird shit will eat through clear coat in no time, especially the toyotas' "environmentally friendly" thin ass paint.

Good luck man, hopefully someone with good input will chime in.

I hear you. Toyotas are known to have super thin/soft paint, especially now days. My ranger was bulletproof.

Bird bombs are very acidic and in today's green environmental paints the acid can eat thrue the clearcoat. In hot conditions with the sun beating down on the bird bomb damage happens in just hours. Unfortunately the paint just isnt the same as it used to be .Best advice is get em off as soon as you see them .

Nissan's also have thin clear coat. I had a 2017 before I traded it for my 2020 taco and it has small spots like op. It's great that it was in brilliant silver and not noticeable.

I highly recommend ceramic coating if you havent done it already. Unless you want to wax your car every 2-3 months.

Ceramic coating really makes a difference though, its better protection than wax/sealant.

I've been thinking of getting it coated. What brand would you recommend?

I have used this stuff, but not sure if available in states. Any ceramic/nano coating will do. There are "hybrid" ceramic coatings, they are meant to boost the existing coating. I have both and the results are amazing.

I go offroad quite a bit in summer and no pin striping yet, paint looks great.

9H, perfect. Make sure you buff it out 100% perfect before it cures. Otherwise you end up with swirls/discolorations. Only way to fix is with polishing compound and start all over again. I screwed up a bit on some corners and around badges, but nobody sees it, but me.

Good luck man, hopefully you have some detailing experience:)

Edit: dont get fooled by their "scratch resistant" statement. It will still scratch just not as bad.

Clear coat failures appear to be like a sunburn, your’s looks like a chem etch from bird poop such as mentioned before.

I used CarPro Cquartz UK 3.0. This is how my 17 year old Taco looks like now.
