any recomendations for a GOOD, FREE antivirus?

Avira and AVG have been good for me.

 

i used avast for awhile.

if you're also in the air force currently, they should provide free mcafee or norton for your home computer. the army does, and im sure the whole of DOD does because protecting your computer in turn helps to protect DOD networks.

 

AVG Antivirus Free Edition. I work at a local computer shop, and that's the only Antivirus we've put on our customer's computers for ~8 years and we've had great luck with it.

I've personally used it for about 8 years on my personal computers as well.

A runner up would be Avast! Antivirus

 

ad-a-ware has a great antivirus and microsoft essentials is nothing to turn your nose up at a free and very good program....you can google it...to find the web site

 

Like the others on here stated AVG although I have noticed more and more that AVG hasn't been able to catch alot of the stuff that Malwarebytes and Spybot has, mostly all of the fraud Antivirus'

 

i highly recommend Avast! antivirus

right now i use microsoft security essentials because i figure it would look terrible for them to have a subpar antivirus. for them, if they make a superior antivirus, it would look like windows computers rarely got viruses at all. so i went with that

Totally true. I've fixed probably 25 AVG equipped computers with different looking fictitious antivirus suites that either Malwarebytes or Combofix was able to fix with no problems.

The thing about those is it doesn't really show up as a traditional "virus", but is more lumped into the category of malware.

Most infections/threats can be resolved with a combination of AVG, Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware. Hijackthis, Dialafix, and combofix are also great tools.

 

OMG! Run from norton and mcafee

 

Norton is just plain bloatware nowadays

i have no issues with norton. it's the symantec endpoint protection. not a memory hog as some of their earlier programs were.

EDIT: it was free from the Army, i wouldn't spend my own money on it when there are free programs out there to use.

 

AVG, Avast and Avira are all decent.

If you surf porn or download warez or music/movies, you will get infected as those AVs aren't up to that level of mischief.

 

Use Avast! its been good to me since AVG turned into an advertising company.
