The MS170 looks appealing for how compact & light it is. Also the price point.
Any reason why I should look at something bigger and/or with more power, or you think that would be enough?

 

If I hadn't found the deal on mine, and had bought new, I would have most likely bought the MS170. It's a good saw. My father in law has a bunch of saws including an MS170 (almond orchards). It's got good power and is easy to use.

For clearing roads, and general stuff around the house, I think the MS170 would make a good saw. It's 16 inch bar will get you through a 30 inch fallen tree... which is a pretty damn big freaking tree lol.

There are so many options and just wasn't sure if there would be a need for a bigger one in my application.
Sounds like it should be plenty for me.

Out of curiosity, what's the biggest diameter tree you've cleared on a trail?

 

I've never measured... But this one is probably the 2nd biggest (diameter)(but it was perpendicular to the road).



And the one @2BeersPlease @Sharkfrog and I cleared this past weekend was probably the the most clearing I've had to do on one tree. It was laying almost directly parallel in the road, so it was laying in the road around 40 feet.

 

it's not about the size of the saw it's how you use it



this is the smallest saw Echo makes and it's always worked well for me

But it IS how you use it. (for others) When you're out there cutting up shit you need to be careful. You can't just go chopping in to the wood. You need to know which way the tree is going to pinch. You need to know if it's on a slope, if and which way it's going to roll, when you get through it. You can get yourself fucked up if you aren't paying attention.

With that little guard on the tip of your saw... I'd say you're doing about 14 inches.

That Echo is a good saw. I've used the older version of that model a lot in the orchard. Ran strong and was easier to start than the Husqvarna or Stihls.

 

That the second I got it home
Shortly after the tip guard came off and I flipped the chain the correct direction (not the bar that doesn't matter)

I have three ego tools (blower, hedge trimmer, & this chainsaw) and three batteries that I got pretty damn cheap. The battery life is very impressive, as well as the charge time. We've got a few acres up here, and I've never actually used more than 2 batteries while working on things.

My old man has the ego mower and I was impressed with it. Nice & lightweight and lasts a while on one battery. Folds up pretty compact too

 

My dad just picked up their mower last weekend. He said he's been pretty impressed with it so far
