Stock vs Modd'ed

I was wanting to spend some $$ on my Taco and Mod it out, when my next door neighbor says to me, "Just leave it Stock, you will have better resale value and less headaches..."

So, i'm curious as to how many people feel the same way...?

 

No only reason is because the best way to sell a slightly modded truck...return it to stock and sell the aftermarket parts seperate! WIN WIN

 

do what ya want, if you do mild mods and keep your stock stuff then you can replace it when you go to sell it....let us know when you start modding, lol!!! one warning tho when you start modding you can't stop.......

agreed.

i wouldn't do anything crazy like a 6'' lift, 35's, huge bumper, supercharger, etc. but doing a few modest things like a 3'' lift, new wheels, and bigger tires; you have a whole new truck. those three things will keep your truck running just as well and driving just as well, maybe even better (depending on the lift and lift components), than it did before. plus, if you keep all the factory stuff, you can swap it out easily in case you ever sell it, and you can sell the aftermarket stuff too.

 

that is also true. some spoiled teenager will talk their parents into buying a modded truck from an individual for the actual price of the truck along with the price of the mods. however, a dealership won't. they will buy it at lower than the actual value of the truck, without value of the mods. then they will turn around and sell it to that same spoiled teenage kid for a higher price than what it's worth for the truck along with the mods.

Your neighbor is right for the most part. As I do with my motorcycles, I will save all my truck OEM parts (suspension, bumpers, etc). I'll return it to stock before selling it. It's easier to get some of the money I spent on mod if I sell them separately. Most people just want a clean slate when they buy new toys, then make them their own.

I can't blame them, I'm the same way.

 

Once you start. The shit will hit the fan. I think i have put around $4500 in the year i have had the mod bug. I would spend $4500 right now if i could. So just take this for what it is worth

So, are you buying your truck so you can own it, or so you can sell it?

I keep my cars for ten years before I sell them and get dimes on the dollar when I sell. So I do what I want.

If you flip your car at two or four years, best to keep the mods to a minimum. Keep the original parts so you can return to stock. Buyers won't pay any extra at all for our mods, and typically see them as a detriment not a positive.

 

I personally thinking about worrying about resale value is stupid (for my situation). I'm driving it until the wheels fall off....then getting another. Life is to short to worry about getting every little penny back out of something later on. I'd rather have fun, not be like every other vehicle on the road, and get next to nothing out of my truck.

 

agreed. I started out with a set of 5100s up front. Next thing I know I'm powercoating my tool box, and dropping big money on a bigger lift. Still not done either .

 

Best advice right here! Why would you ever want to sell your Taco anyways???

 

If you do decide to sell, sell it stock. I think the key to resale value is the condition of your paint and your interior, so as long as you take care of those, you'll be good to go. And your aftermarket parts will sell in a heartbeat here on TW later on. That's my .02.
