I’ve got OVtune already, on the latest beta tune available for my truck. It helps to an extent, but it’s still not what we all expected when we purchased our trucks.
    Definitely appreciate your feedback though.

For sure if you have MT get 4.88, if AT get 5.29. You will be putting some torque to the ground.

I have an AT and don’t plan on going any larger than 33” tires, and as far as armor goes, I may go with a hybrid slimline front bumper down the road, but that would be it as far as weight goes. I was considering 4.88’s, curious why you suggest 5.29’s for the AT?

    Find the 5.29 thread.

I see you are in FL. Maybe you would be happy with 4.88 as I am, BUT I have a MT. If I had an AT I would go 5.29 for sure, just better ratio match with engine and transmission. More torque to the ground quicker

I switched to Lucas 85w140 and the sound is still there but it’s a little quieter.

I recently added a 3” lift with pizza cutter 255/85r16s (33”). From stock it feels more sluggish (if that’s the correct term). Going over Mt.Hood I could feel the additional weight of the load E tires and Fiberglass canopy resulting in me dropping to 4th gear to maintain 60mph. I should also add I’m a manual. Is it too unreasonable to be able to maintain 5th or 6th gear going over a pass? Or would I be more pleased spending the money on getting 4.88s?

Do I need to regear first before doing the tune?

Thanks for the reply. I think it might actually be standard motor oil. I cleaned the area off and drove in 4wd as you requested and it was bone dry at the end of the day. Thinking back I had an oil change at the dealer last week and the oil drain plug is right behind that spot.

I went to Main Line Overland, they are expensive compared to most but they do great work. They start the break-in process for you so all you have to do is drive home and put the extra 450 miles on the truck until its first oil change. They are located in West Chester, PA.

Just got back from my 500 mile service. I did notice the gears were slightly quieter after the new oil was put in. I can still hear a faint howl but overall its quiet. Ive had them in for about three weeks and I can say the difference is a lot more noticeable on the freeway. I can hold sixth gear around 2100 RPMS. Its tough to notice the difference around town but there is an improvement in drivability for sure. Overall, it is worth it.

As a general consensus from you 4.88 guys, does the 4.88's eliminate the gear hunting situation for you? I have a 3rd gen 4 banger on 31.6" tires without any weight added and I am looking to do a performance mod that will not only correct the issue of gear hunting at the top end, but also add the pep on the low end. I really would like some versatility with mpg and performance when needed. Nitro Gear recommends the 4cyl applications to run 200rpm higher than stock-which is about the difference between the 4.88 vs. 5.29. All those that have done 4.88, can you chime in wether if you were at my point in the build, would you have rather done 5.29?

Have you considered 5.71 gears at all?

I have not even considered the 5.71. I saw a guy that did in the 5.29 thread, but I'm afraid to have that motor reving high all the time. I want to add the necessary performance mod to overcome the malady the transmission has on the top end but I still want a DD that is comfortable to drive.
