    EDIT: Its the ABS

    I can't find the noise.
When I start the car and first put it in first, i hear a little servo actuate. Seat belt deal? Its not the locks or anything. Start, shift, whir, and I'm underway.

    Transfer case checking its position?

Wife's mini makes similar noise.. but that's the headlights calibrating (self aiming)

Curiosity has the better of me. Who knows what this little whir is?

I was thinking the same thing. It's not an awful noise, so I never thought to ask, but I have noticed it. I don't hear it while reversing after starting the truck up, nor do I hear it while sitting idle. The noise is only audible when I first put the truck into drive.

Don't know what it is. Would guess the anti lock/traction control solonoids maybe.
Kinda cool though. My old Yukon used to sound like Areowolf when it took off.

May be the SRS charging once you get above a certain speed (5 MPH)? Not sure. I know my 2010 does that when I am in 1st gear starting forward.

The 2009 and up Tacomas have an air injection pump that runs when you start the truck. Pump runs for about 30 seconds then turns off. This is what you are probably hearing

My understanding is that it is the ABS system calibrating. My '07 did it and my '10 does as well. I find it is most noticeable when backing out of the driveway and putting it in "D".......faint "Whirrr".

I was just looking into this noise myself and as others have already stated, ABS calibration so I've been told.

    Yep.

It does sound terrible though! I used to think it was my throwout bearing, then realized it only does it once.

Yea.. this is definitely a servo type noise. Definitely not a pump not .. wirrrrrrrr... like a movie robot waking up. *wirp* about 1/4 second electric servo noise. I'll agree it may be abs. Is the abs on the right side of the truck? Sounds front right of me. Its dark out and, I just ate. Never heard an ABS make a noise before. I mean, its obviously my newest car, but its a toyota. They usually stick "tried and true" vs breaking new ground.

It doesn't do it till it actually is "under way" for the first time that cycle of the ignition.

Surprised, thought I'd be the only one NOT to know and a bunch of "search stupid A$$ hole" comments.

Never knew what it was, but I've heard it in three different 2nd gens I drove, so I figured it was normal. My '05 does it on the initial take off after it's been sitting a while.

it makes the noise, as supataco said, immediately after putting the vehicle in D and driving off. i don't even notice it anymore.
