I see it as part of a general pattern. Within the past couple of decades it seems society has decided it's a good idea to delegate critical thinking skills, and this is one of many examples.

Sold my 2013 f150 ecoboost. It was a piece of crap. I sunk more money into repair bills. It had a nasty habit of shifting into first gear going down the interstate. Not good. It was a programming issue along with another problem. It took ford months to fix. Also major repair bills on a leaking turbo, that I didn’t use. They lost me as a customer. Went to Toyota. Gladly!

I think I paid that for premium in San Francisco when I was there for work last. I was driving someone elses $90,000 BMW though so I wasnt in a position to complain about gas prices. Lol. I did complain that f-ing Ihop was closed at 11:00pm. What kind of crap is that?

    Good post.

I think the other problem is, 3rd gen looks so good and agressive. When folks buy it, they expect it to drive like a raptor, but thats not the case. Then, like you said they go on TW and shit hits the fan, endless complaining. Impossible to prove them wrong that taco is actually a good little truck.

I love my little tacoma as well. Does everything and more i need it to do. I dont tow anything heavy and dont have a big family. I will keep it for at least 10 more years. Will be interesting to see how the 3.5 ages.

I think you nailed it. It's one of the better looking trucks on the road and that sets the expectations high even when the stats on the truck are not some big secret. And I think that's why people still buy the truck even after a test drive. The complaining starts as soon as the new car smell wears off.

Even though @stun gun talks endless shit about the second gens looks, at least it did not set any false expectations in people's mind. If you bought a second gen it was because you wanted what it could offer, not by how sexy and aggressive it looked. Was that a fail or a win on toyotas part?

Personally I hate driving Raptors in daily driver situations. The 10 speed gear hunts worse than any Tacoma ive ever driven. Its too got damn wide. The driver assists are wayyyyyy too aggressive. The only thing it has going for it on the road over my Tacoma is straight line speed. Overall im extremely happy with my Tacoma. I even accidentally overloaded the bed a few weeks ago and it didnt feel underpowered. The front end just felt super light and the rear end very unstable over 50mph.

    100% agree.

the 3rd gen is a very nicely styled truck.

In another 20 years it will still be a good looking truck. And hopefully still reliable- only time will tell.

While I agree for the most part there's always two sides to every story. I've never seen a forum so blindly loyal. Around here if you have an issues with your truck, small or large, perceived or real, and post about it you draw out the fanboys. Queue the that's how Toyota designed it, did you test drive at all, mine doesn't do that therefore yours doesn't, its not an issue to me so it shouldn't be to you, etc.

I do have some small annoyance with my truck. I'm not always thrilled with how the trans shifts, the motor could use some more low end and no fucking auto headlights on a near 40K truck. That doesn't mean I don't like my truck and I'd still buy it again tomorrow over the competition. We can be happy overall with our trucks but still have issues that bother us. There's always room for improvement.

    The problem isnt the complaints.
The problem is the complainer who is raging about a small issue, cursing toyota and their false reputation and how he was ripped off for "muh 40k truck". Lemon law!!!!
The problem is its same X complaints, over and over and over for near 5 years now. So much so, that people who don't have these issues feel like they are being attacked and should defend themselves. Which has lead to a pretty hostile environment for newcomers making a post about an issue they have with their truck

Why the fuck someone would feel "attacked" by that or feel the need to "defend" themselves is beyond me. But to each their own. Seems like there are dipshits on both sides, and I'm probably one of them, just not sure which one yet.

That's not a shot at you BTW.

The auto headlights thing makes me shake my head to this day. My damned 2000 Silverado base model had auto headlamps. I also find halogen headlamps on a $40,000 vehicle in 2016 to be stupid as well.

agreed. I like this truck, but I won’t be buying another Toyota.

my good friend is about to lemon law his for the timing cover leak. I asked if he was getting another one and he said “no, I’ll go with a tundra or f150. Everyone I know with a Tacoma has had issues with it.”

They feel attacked because people like the OP of this thread. Kinda ironic we are posting in it.

Your last line hits the nail on the head. While this is TW, so it would be a little weird if people here actually didn't blindly express some Tacoma love, if I bought into all the times online and IRL I've heard "X truck is a piece of shit or the greatest thing ever, all I hear about it troubles or how it's a gift from Jesus," I'd end up with a new truck every week lol.

With Ford it's always Ecoboost or 10 speed transmission complaints, even though I've had three for work go to 200k with no issues.

With Dodge it's just a piece of shit, even though I know plenty of Mopar fans that have never had an issue.

With Chevy it's usually some knock on the interiors or differentials, even though my mothers 2004 Yukon still prowls the streets on probably it's fifth owner by now.

With Japanese brands it's always flawless but old and slow, even though forum goers now known the hiccups the 3rd Gen's have and a boosted 2nd/3rd Gen makes good power for a V6 truck.

The truth is all these trucks come from companies that spend more than any of us will ever make on designing their vehicles and they're all pretty amazing machines. They all can have issues, I mean engines are literally a way to harness the heat/power from explosions, but the majority of the time they all make it well into old age before being scraped. All the chatter is usually a strange pissing match to represent a company, like its your favorite sports team, blindly and with your wallet regardless of the product they put on the field.

I only have 6000 miles on my 19 Ranger and have really enjoyed it so far. It’s not perfect but the 2.3 Turbo is such a joy to drive and the tranny is fine 95% of the time. I think the Tacoma still looks way better and has better approach angles which help off roading but so far I’m having a happier driving experience with the Ranger then I did my 3rd gen. We will see how long I hold onto it but at least 3-4 years since I have a problem of changing vehicles often. Though I’m really excited to see what Toyota has up there sleeves next.
