Mountain Hatch thread...

Not sure on overall strength but I would say it is less rigid then the factory one, because of the material and the fact there are no structural ribs or anything. I would think pairing it with a reinforcement cap would be a great combo.

 

What kind of motorcycles? Dirt bikes? If so, I don’t know why you need stronger. Even for a fat Harley, I don’t see why you’d need it stronger. With that said, I don’t think it’s more rigid than stock, but it is thicker.

 

a 94 DR350 dual sport that weighs almost 370lbs loaded up. I can see my stock tailgate plastic bow a bit with the back tire on it. not a huge concern but was thinking this may cause the mountain hatch to permanently flex and not lay flat anymore. I usually throw a piece of long wood under the rear tire to help out but still can see it bowing a bit.

You should see my buddies tailgate damage from hauling his Dyna in the rear of His is a 2nd gen access cab. These tailgates are pretty flimsy.

 

I Installed my Mountain Hatch panel today but I wanted to see what I could do about the issue of warping and pulling the bolts out.

After taking a look at the tail gate there is bump out at the inside of the tail gate sheet metal. Which would hold the panel away from the plastic inserts the bolts go into. Thus causing lots of stress in that area.

I used my rotozip to clear out a pocket for the bump out feature to sit in. It's not the pertiest but it lest the panel sit flat and the stock bolts seem to be long enough this way. I'm letting it bake in the sun to see what happens.

 

I'm curious as to why people keep buying this product when there are cheaper, better alternatives that are just plug and play.

 

For me I wasn't interested in a metal insert.

 

Care to share these cheaper and better alternatives? I tried 2 or 3 different solutions before buying the mountain hatch and none of them were better.

 

You're probably be better off with a tailgate reinforcement from brute force fab or mobtown

 

Yep, I’m totally happy with my Mountain Hatch, I’ve also had zero issues with the bolts pulling out. Would love to see these better and cheaper options. (I actually believe $200 for this is a good deal).

 

@excorcist did you try the pakrax one? Or has anyone else tried it that can lend their feedback on that one?

I’ve been watching the mountain hatch for over a year. Never could get over the price even though lots of people I know love it and use it.

so I finally decided to pull the trigger when I got one for $160 shipped.
I like it so far.

 

I didn't. Looks like a good option for people that need some extra rigidity.

 

I have this. It took about 5 minutes for a pain free installation and works well. No exposexual cup holders, though.

 

I emailed Mountain Hatch twice and it's been several weeks I never got a response. Which is kind of ridiculous because I think that's enough time. All I wanted to know is if I could pick it up locally since I'm close. All they had to do is tell me no instead of just ignoring me. Makes me not want to buy one now.

 

They were moving to a store. They just opened it. You can go by the store and pick one up now.

 

Any photos you could add? Does the tailgate dampener still work ok with the heavier weight? I had asked another person and they said that they didnt have issues, that it opened a bit faster but was still ok.

 

Emailed mountain hatch a couple times myself with no response.
If you can’t click it ty clack a response to me. Why would I buy your product.

 

Reading this thread makes me glad I didnt buy one. Some aren't fitting, some are bowing, one has to modify it to fit, included hardware doesny work. Sounds like a good product like 50% of time, which makes it a fail.

 

Exactly. But they sure seem able to accept payments and ship out products.

 

No problem with dampener. I don't think this weighs significantly more than the corrugated composite you take off.

Another bonus--no BS branding on display. It drives me nuts to advertise for every damn vendor, clothing manufacturer and product of any kind these days. Pay me if you want me to be your billboard. Sorry, I'm old and grumpy.
