I bought this used Ferrari off ebay a few weeks ago. It was missing a few pieces but I was able to order what I needed from Lego and I just finished it!

So hey, belated followup. What did y'all think of the build and final model, both of you? Have you put the ship together at least once?

A few custom Star Wars microfighter scale sets I’ve been working on lately. I like the smaller scale sets but haven’t been a huge fan of the base LEGO designs so I usually tweak them or find other MOCs online to tinker with. I’ve got a handful of others in the works too.

The build was fun, even though I had to "correct" my 6 year old a few times on what and how he was doing it. Buy hey, he's only 6, building something that's supposedly intended for 16+ so I can't really complain too much about that.

As far as the final model, it looks fucking bad ass! The shitty pics I took and posted don't do it any justice at all. Once it's all built and put together it looks glorious!

So to put the ship itself together, you actually have to take some pcs off of it that you built as you went on, and the final bag (bag 15) are the pcs that you then put on the ship to make it "complete". We looked through the disassembly/assembly pages together, what we had to take off and put on and how it'd look, and my son decided it wouldn't look "as cool" as it does on the island, as a shipwreck. The island would be bare, and the ship would kinda look bare as well. At least in our opinion. We saved the bag obviously, in case his opinion changes later on. But for now it'll stay the way it is pictured on the box.

Corrections aside, pretty awesome that he built it himself. I have fond memories of building the original Black Seas Barracuda with my dad in a similar way. Glad y’all enjoyed the build, keep it up.

The ship is pretty impressive in its own right, but I completely understand where you’re coming from in keeping the island together. A common complaint is the lack of conversion for it to carry the cannons, though you can use parts from the island to build your own way to fit them. It’s a great set all around; can’t wait to get another copy or two myself for... reasons.

We definitely enjoyed it. I tried not to interfere too much, and constantly reminded him to look at the picture first before putting anything together. My job was to find pieces and kind of lay them out, and then he'd build. A few times he found the pieces on his own. All of the sets that he's gotten so far, we built together. I hope he doesn't get bored of building together as he gets older.

Any recommendation on buying parts separately for a relatively big set? My wife really wants the disney LEGO castle. Refuse to pay 2-300 ontop from eBay... I see they have brick lists, is there a way to just auto buy without typing in each individual brick code? Thanks you LEGO masters lol

There are many outlets for buying individual lego parts. I’m just getting familiar with them but from what I know:
    https://www.lego.com/en-us/page/static/pick-a-brick?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIicPFofzY6QIVB6_ICh2XFgySEAAYAiAAEgJM4vD_BwE&ef_id=EAIaIQobChMIicPFofzY6QIVB6_ICh2XFgySEAAYAiAAEgJM4vD_BwE:G:s&s_kwcid=AL!790!3!330149568435!e!!g!!buy lego pieces&Buffer&cmp=KAC-INI-GOOGUS-GO-US-EN-PS-BUY-SHOP-Pick_a_Brick-BC-EX-RN-XX

    https://www.bricklink.com/v2/main.page

    https://www.brickowl.com/catalog/lego-parts

    https://www.choose-a-brick.com/lego-parts-for-sale/

There’s a bunch of others if you Google buying Lego pieces.

I’ve used Bricklink a few times. Just make sure you understand all it’s features before you order. Take note of the shipping charges!!

The process can be tedious and pricey.

Do you have an XML spreadsheet for list of pieces? That would make your project a whole lot easier.

    Good luck!

Edit: If you mean this one, the ebay price seems like a bargain.
    https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/the-disney-castle-71040

Edit 2: Can be bought used. Make sure you check out the sellers ratings and where it’s coming from. You can sort by country, price...

I buy and sell LEGO pieces and sets using Bricklink all the time. I actually have to run to the post office to ship another set today. Also, if you use the “Wanted List” feature it takes a lot of the tediousness out of the process. You can import an XML list or a file from one of a few build programs (or you can manually add the pieces using the site). From there you just set your preferred store location (I always set it for US sellers only) and it will show you the stores that have the most pieces available on your wanted list. I can usually source all the parts I need for a build from 1-2 sellers. Sometimes for more unique pieces I’ll need a 3rd or 4th seller but my experience with the site has been great so far.

Which castle? I can get you a list of all the parts and even price it out for you on Bricklink.

is it ever really cheaper to buy a set by buying the individual pieces? seems like that would be more expensive.

Correct, it’ll never be as cost effective as buying the set new while it is still being made. But if it’s retired, it would depend. With the smaller sets it’s almost always more expensive than the original retail to piece them together. But some of the older sets are super expensive to buy new now and even used can cost a fair amount more than original retail. On a larger set, I’d imagine it’s unlikely to be cheaper, unleas it’s a collectors set that’s worth a lot of money. If it’s a normal set, it would depend on whether or not it’s still in production and if not, how much they go for now. Either way, I could probably find a used one missing some pieces or the mini figures for a better price than eBay.
