Clunk sound

I have an 08 trd off road 4wd access cab that I love. But for atleast the past 20k it has made a clunk noise when ever I back out of my drive or come to a fast stop. The clunk only seems to happen once per change in direction. I've had it to several shops who all keep telling me that they don't know what it is, but its safe... any help? Edit: the sound seems to be coming from the front of the truck.

 

Can you get someone to drive it back and forth while you stand nearby? Even with the hood up? Safely?

 

I've tried driving it back and forth while a friend listened. He said it sounds like its coming from. The control arms.. although the shops have all said they are ok..

 

the truck did have the frame replaced about two years ago for what it's worth.

 

Is it coming from the brakes? I know the pads can do something that sounds like what you’re describing.

 

I dont think so, I've heard brakes click before, this is much louder.

Mine does this if I am backing from the driveway and have the steering wheel at full lock. Never knew what it us but it’s never gotten worse or caused an issue. I just don’t go to turn to lock now.

 

Torque the front LCA alignment cam bolts/nuts to 130ft#'s. This is common for those to be under torqed and they'll make noise.

 

Check your brake calipers, make sure they aren’t loose or missing a bolt, check skid plates if you have them, I have had clunks from both of these things

 

Look to see how much play there is with the carrier bearing and transmission mounts. These are causes of cluck sounds. It is true that the drum brakes do clunk when changing direction. This is normal.

 

Nothing is missing on my brakes, and I'm sure its not them. I'll check the LCA bolts when I get a chance.

 

Pretty sure thats the issue. That is unless of course you have SPC/LR UCAs, they have had issues.

 

Might be a dumb question but tightening those bolts shouldn't mess with my alignment right?

 

So I torqued the rear bolts to 100ft lbs and no clunk. This website is awesome. Also I wonder why Toyota had them so loose to begin with?

Ok, I found a spec sheet that said 100, I was afraid of breaking a bolt
