quoted ~$400 for MT & 4wd fluid service at small Toyota shop, is that excessive? JiffyL wants $450

is the gear oil used in the 1st gen tacos that pricey?
i am coming up with $55 a gallon and in need of 3 gallons in all (i think)

is this the good stuff? and what is recommended for use

 

unfortunately they would not bundle them all together for me, i did ask for discounted service! $89 each 4wd and $130(ish) for the MT

 

Well you can't just expect to pay for the fluid itself with a mechanic.

Mechanics need to make a living; they have overhead costs and still need to support themselves and their family.

Take the fact that they've got a lot more experience working on cars and trucks than you do, not to mention the means of doing said work.

If you're inquiring about work for your truck again like you have before, I'd politely ask you to stop wasting other mechanics time unless you're actually going to get it done.

 

Manual tranny?? Do it yourself. Easy. Diffs are easy as well. $235 is a lot for labor

when i was lubing the 4x4 jeeps 30 years ago this service was $14.95 per gearbox lol

Ugh, I feel you, man. Yeah, you may get it a little cheaper, but not much. Honestly I would rather pay more for a trusted shop and forget saving the money. Positive is that it doesn’t need to happen often, so it’s an every couple year “thang.”

I’m facing the same thing. Always been a manual guy and I hate automatic transmissions when it comes to stuff like this, so paying for the change so it gets done right. Rest (diff) I will do myself

 

That's about right I think. Manual transmission, transfer case and differential fluids are super simple to change. Oil Weights and capacities are listed in the manual. Don't play that much if you don't have to. It's a lot cheaper if you do it yourself. That way you don't pay the labor for it.

It’s super easy to do this fluid changes and you can save plenty of money.

Goggles
New crush washers
Hand held oil pump that attaches to the oil bottles with tube
Oil catch pan that stores the oil while you drain it.
Roll of rags.

i have that it takes 4.6 quarts for the MT?

 

5 speed R150 transmission only takes 2.7 quarts I believe

 

i was going by what was on my receipt from having MT done 14 months ago ... 4.6 quarts and 30 minutes labor + supplies, tax + yada yada

 

If it was just the transmission they charged you two extra quarts.
Did you have the transfer case done too?
