Ok.. I'll get out and lay under the car and have the 9 year old shift it into gear and drive off.

Ok... did a few tests and crawled around under it..

can only find 2 possible culprits. The abs block is right on the fender there and could definitely be the source.. But I don't know enough about abs to know why it would be doing anything like that. maybe they all do but are inaudible in most cars for some reason. The tacoma isn't exactly luxury car insulated against noise.

The only other thing that looks like a big servo is a big 4 inch square block on the front axle. If anyone has the whir and no 4x4 then I guess its the ABS.

Sounds like a bad idea. That is if you value your life and or truck.

You are correct my fine bald brotha' !! :D probably more like 7-10 sec though if your talking about the initial turning of the key

You bring up a good point Ryan, the shorter duration you hear that "electronic buzz" , the healthier your fuel system is, the longer duration & something is going to go batshit on you & it will almost always be the " in tank" fuel pump, I've changed a couple in other rigs (non toyotas) & there wasn't one of them that was less than $275 -$300 for the pump, Toyota's prolly no different ;)

Mine makes that noise too and it sounds like it's coming from somewhere behind the lower dash. It only makes the noise after a cold start after reversing then going forward. Doesn't make the noise if I just put it in D and drive off (I think).

I noticed it but figured it was normal since it's done it from day one. My wife asked me what it was and I told her it was the passenger side ejector seat powering up.

It is the ABS system. My wife's Honda Odyssey makes the exact same noise at nearly the exact same time after starting/driving the vehicle. I only notice it when I put it in drive and pull away slowly without the radio on. If there is any other noise going on when you first pull away after starting it is hard to hear.

Same noise here, always does it when I put in drive. It has done this day one when I drove it off the dealer lot so i've never worried about it.

    Too few to list.
Mine does it too. It's only after start ups and only on drive but not in reverse. It's the abs system. If not that, it's the flux capacitors.

I wasn't intending to iterate that it was a problem.

Its definitely a planned noise. And its almost definitely the ABS.

Haven't heard a fuel pump in years.. well not a factory fuel pump. Your fuel pump shouldn't run on something like this at start like that unless you have a leak somewhere.

Used to hear the old.. whirrrrrrr thump on old cars if you turned the key to on before starting, pressurizing the system. The brakes thing seems to be a little more of a prepping the system thing, as it only does it when starting out, you can start it and not move and it won't do it.

It might only be on the 2009+ due to the new system

Mine makes the noise too. I wonder if taking out the ABS fuse would cause the noise to stop? Of course the noise isn't a problem, but it seems like that would be an easy way to figure out if ABS was the cause.

LOL this thread answered the question I've been wondering. Every morning, after I back out of my driveway and put my truck into drive, I hear a soft whining sound for 2-3 sec.

Yeah it kind of sounds like an electronic lock or something? Like the duration of it is about equal to a door automatically locking, but its a whining instead of a locking noise.

I'm gonna pay attention for these sounds when I leave for work this morning. Never noticed any of these except for the whoosh sound made by the brake booster.
