Did you mean the truck hunts for gears from 5th to 4th when moderately loaded? And are you still running a factory tire?

 

Yes. 5th drops to 4th periodically. Stock OR tire size. OVTune 2.0 beta. I'm anxious to try out the last version of 2.0 tune with the towing mode to see if that makes a difference. Otherwise, gearlock will keep it in 5th.

 

I have a 2.7L with a +1 tire size and don't plan to add anything other than a bed cover. It seems my only hope of an OV tune would be end user programmable, and I am not experienced tuning ECU's. There are so few inputs of information on applications regearing with this motor on this forum or anywhere else for that matter. I want my truck to be versatile without overgearing too much, but now that I see you saying your truck still hunts for gears on the highway with 4.88's and factory tires, it seems 5.29's would be the only way to correct the problem these automatic transmissions give us on the top end in overdrive right?

 

You might find some more info on regearinging in the 2nd gen forum as they use the same 2.7L. As far as OVTune, if and when they come out with a tune for the 2.7L, I'm sure it will be end user programmable using VFTuner, because that's the platform moving forward.

I don't have experience with the 5:29's, so I can't comment on the gear selection at higher speeds, but for the most part, all these trucks are aerodynamically challenged, and anything over 70 MPH will gulp fuel and play with the gears. Of course, elevation and weight come into play, as well as flat ground with a headwind vs rolling hills. If you're only running one tire size up with no weight, then I'd think 4:88's would be the solution. I've mentioned it before, but calling the reps at ECGS may help you with your decision. GL!

 

Well got my gears installed today. Went super smooth. BUT my truck is throwing all sorts of codes. ABS codes, brake codes, BLind spot codes, traction control, 4wd you name it seems to be throwing it. Tried disconnecting batteries but no luck. Guessing I stretched an abs wire to tight or something. Hoping dealer can get me in Monday to read the codes. Had the diffs swapped right at 3hrs. Highly recommend doing the exchange program with ECGS. Truck runs awesome now. 6th gear at 70 and never budged even up hills it used to sometimes drop to 3rd

 

Did you get the gears cryo’d or polished? I was told to keep it at 65 mph until the break in period is over.

 

Anyone regear their Manual? Thinking of jumping on the groupbuy. I'm running 255/85/16s (KM2s) and fox 2.5s all around with OME Heavy leaf. I'm running stock gearing. I get like 19-20mpg at the moment

 

I regeared to 4.88 and love it.

 

My truck has a 4.30 gear from the factory, and I run a 265/70/17 (31.6" tire). I plan to even run a URD SC kit in the future to add that missing power that the V6 has already. So eventually I will have power and torque equivalent to the V6, though on a platform that is capable of being more efficient if I choose to keep my foot out of it. That's why I am leaning towards the 4.88 gear. I have been told by more than one person that the 5.29 would be better for the 4cyl because it is underpowered, though I have not given all the information about the plan for my build. I want a truck that has the available power but is still versatile, and that's why I am concerned about running 2121-2773 RPM's @ (65-85mph) with 5.29's on the highway. 1956-2558RPM @65-85mph with 4.88's seems a little more reasonable for that small motor, especially with the added power of the SC. I just want to do it right the first time, and I believe there are enough knowledgeable people watching this thread that could give me advice based on the build I just mentioned Thank you.

If you have the cash and can do it, DO IT. NO ONE with a V6 regrets it at all. A 4 will probably be even better. Just go 4.88 if you are that worried.

 

I just pulled the trigger thanks to this thread. I was hoping to find a better price but I live in North Idaho so not many other options without driving a day or two. July 8th I go in for the install.

 

Thanks for the encouragement, though my approach is usually more calculated to achieve a desired outcome. Measure twice and cut once kinda deal.

The other extreme is analysis paralysis. But you didn't understand mass and power are involved, so I am now unconfused how it is you are stuck on the calculated part.

Really without tables and graphs, or with - all we have are RPM comparison, good ones at that with tire size calculators, etc but nothing with engine power and mass, because mainly those remain unchanged in comparisons. In reality they are logically walled in, so to speak. You can only buy certain ratios.

 

personally I’d sell the 4cyl and get a SR5. There is no replacement for displacement. You are pissing money into the wind chasing more power with your current truck just to get to the same power level as the stock 3.5L.

Typically, our v6 AT trucks come stock with 3.71 gears (edit 3:90), and v6 MT trucks come stock with 4:30 gears. Yet, your stating the 2.7l 4cyl AT comes stock with 4:30 gears? Any chance you've called Chase or Steven at ECGS for their recommendations?
