TRD Performance Exhaust: To Drone or Not To Drone...That is the Question

I just purchased a 2020 Pro and it HAD the trd exhaust. I couldn't handle the BRRRRRRR sound at highway speeds. Every time you press the gas you hear that sound. When driving slow in a parking lot you cant hear the exhaust note at all, but when accelerating from stop light to stop light it's there. If you ask me it cheapens the truck and was too much for me.

I purchased an OEM stock exhaust and installed it on my truck. It's perfectly quiet at all speeds. Im very pleased with my decision.

 

I love my TRD performance exhaust. It doesn’t drone at highway speeds. I’ve had numerous people stop me and ask where I got the exhaust from because they love the sound.

 

WD40 is Not OK on rubber, as the petroleum will degrade rubber over time. Simple soapy water works just as good, if not better as it will not damage the rubber and the water evaporates.

 

WOW, I better go check my rubber hangers, I bet the one squirt of WD40 has dissolved them.

 

I like the TRD exhaust but it’s pricey. May just swap the muffler out.

 

Not sure if things changed with the 2016 and up Double Cabs, or if the TRD Exhaust that comes on the TRD Pros is different than the after market one. My 2015 Pro DC had a very annoying drone at 70-75 mph on the freeway. Figured it would go away when I installed the Shell and the Bed Rug. If anything, it became more annoying. Ended up buying a stock exhaust off a 2015 that only had 1200 miles on it and installed that with the fancy tip that came on the Pro and no more drone. I also talked with a guy who had taken the TRD set off of his DC and his son put it on an extra cab model...NO Drone! So it seems to be specific with the DC. Maybe things have changed with the new model, but I would suggest riding in one that is the same body style as yours that has the exhaust to see if you like it. As to power & mileage? Seems about the same. Then again, if I had been given a choice I would have deleted the coveted hood scoop for better visibility and to eliminate the dreaded scoop glare. The scoop I can live with...the drone I couldn't!

 

For me l, It drones a little between 60-70 in 6th gear. My truck is manual so RPM's are going to be higher than the automatic when cruising.

At first it bothered me, but I did get used to it. I drive 75 mph on long trips and there is no drone at that speed or higher.

 

Good post and some really good answers. I am possibly looking into this myself. Good to know they aren't too loud.

 

The TRD exhaust just seems too pricey for what sound you get. I commute 50 miles to work so I definitely don’t want any drone around 75.

 

I guess it comes down to what you want to call "drone" sound.

We all agree the TRD exhaust has a sound different then the stock exhaust. It's heard at different levels of rpm's as you accelerate. At some levels of speed the exhaust note is heard and others it's not.

When you accelerate quickly you will here the TRD exhaust. It's a personal opinion if you like that sound or not.

At some highway speeds, in windy conditions or going up hills/mountains the sound of the exhaust will not go away because the engine is working harder to hold a particular speed. To me this is called "drone"

 

There is no drone with this exhaust and I can tell you I know what drone sounds like. You will be fine.

Just installed mine yesterday, easiest install of a cat back on any vehicle I’ve ever done. Took 20 min. Sounds great and no drone at all.

 

@pandonsf Looks great...Will install mine in the next week or two, simply need to find some time to get it done...Any advice you can offer on the install...

 

really not much to it, i'm lifted about 2.5" so made getting it out and in super easy. Just make sure you have enough room to swing the exhaust out to get it over the axle. I had a exhaust hanger tool as well that made it super simple.

 

I might go with a Borla muffler. Even at 52 I don't care if there is a little drone to get a beefier sound. If it drones I can just shift up or down. Gas is almost free at this point so ...... Had the Camaro RS/SS up to 115 yesterday and trust me that Borla sounded gooooood.

 

I have the borla cat back and i love it. Sometimes i turn off the radio and listen to the exhaust, gurgles nicely when shifting gears. No drone and sounds great.

 

I did it in 15-20 min in my driveway without any prior experience or jacking up the truck, super easy. Just wrap the exhaust tip to prevent scrapes, that's all!
